Whats so special about the 5 year survival mark? Is it assumed that after that amount of time the cancer's gone or what? 5 years doesn't sound like a long time to me.

Cancerous cells are basically mutations, and usually have a more aggressive growth pattern than normal cells. Because of that, it's usually assumed that if a cancer does not recur for five years, they probably got it all the first time. And five years is a somewhat arbitrary time period, but it's used as a guideline.

Occasionally the same TYPE of cancer can recur 10, 15 or even 20 years later, but that doesn't mean that the original cancer recurred, but more likely that a person's cells are particularly susceptible to that type of cancer.

Celebrating 5th year anniversary of treatment for Cancer of Unknow Primary; currently battling bladder cancer (definitely not related to first cancer as pathology is completely different.)
