"Visiting Angels"-type services

My 88 year old father can still cook, pay bills, take medications, negotiate stairs, etc pretty well. But...the day is coming...Does anyone have experience with the in-home visitation/care type of services? Expensive? Covered by insurances? My guess is that my father will initially need (some day) in-home visitation to check in on him, maybe a few times a week. BTW, I live out of state. The service may increase in needs as time goes on. Ideas are appreciated.

Re: "Visiting Angels"-type services

Hi, yes, actually I have a ton of experience with this. Visiting Angels or any other home care agency is private- NOT covered by any insurance or Medicare. However, there are Medicare approved agencies which will help, however your father has to have a need. They call it a skilled need. Meaning, he is unable to do things for himeself such as the ADLs (Activities of daily living) Feeding himself, bathing himself, grooming, bathroom or even walking.

You can use long term insurance (if he has it) for alot of private pay agencies...or you will be paying out of pocket, anywhere from 12-20 dollars per hour for help.

Unfortunatey, many of our parents are at that age where they have been taking care of themselves for so long, nursing homes dont sound like an ideal solution, especially if they are overal healthy- so privately paying an aide or caregiver, is the only option. Its costly. I am dealing with this myself right now.

Best of luck to you.
