    Negative Emg,,,please Help

I recently had an EMG study done on both of my hands,,,and they both came back negative for carpel tunnel and ulnar neuropathy. My pain is still very bad in my ring and pinky fingers and I am still in a lot of pain. I am of course not able to pick up anything, I can't grip vey well and now my doctor seems to think that this is no longer workers comp issue. Could I still have carpel tunnel syndrome and have a negative emg, and also, will cubital tunnel syndrome show up on an emg..........
Any information would help out so much

What kind of pain do you have?

    For how long?

Do you have any idea what caused the pain?

If you tap on your inner wrists do any of your fingers tingle?

Sorry I'm unable to offer more concrete help (I'm just learning myself), but I'd be interested in hearing more about your situation.

They should both show up on an emg.

Did they go all the way up your arms?

My pain goes from my pinky and ring finger, all the way up to my shoulder.
I have lots of pins and needles feelings that shoot from my hands up to my elbow. And yes, when I tap on my wrist, they do hurt. I have read some of the post, and have read that your EMG can be negative and you still have Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, do you know if there is any truth to that?
    Thank you for your input...

When the EMG was done, they went from my elbow down to my hands.
I was just wondering if there could possibly be something else, before I went for a second opinion.

I don't know the answer to that question...sorry.

Why did they only go up to your elbow? That doesn't make much sense to me.

I would do some research and ask some more questions-did you go thru your regular doctor first? maybe go back to him?

I asked the same thing, why are you not going up to my shoulder where the pain is going and coming from also. I will make an appointment with my regular doctor to see what her input is so that I can see what else I can come up with.
    Your insight is most helpful

    Re: Negative Emg,,,please Help

I had an EMG on my right hand in October 2005. It too came back negative for carpal tunnel. Orthopedic surgeon was hesitant to do surgery. On Nov. 10, 2005 I had carpal tunnel release surgery. Even though my EMG was negative the nerve did not have any room. So even though your emg was negative does not mean you don't have CTS.

    bechbumm-

Another possible cause for your pain might be a herniated cervical disc. They can cause pain going all the way down to the fingers. Depending on how herniated disc materials touch a nerve, the pain itself can be intermittent, or only at certain places along the arms.

Before you decide to have CTS surgery, you might consider asking for a referral to a NeuroSurgeon to have a cervical MRI done and examined.

Carpal tunnel refers (I think) to the thumb, pointer and middle finger and the median nerve. The pinkie and ring finger have the ulnar nerve to thank for their existance. So, except that you are dealing with the pinkie and ring finger, you have described my carpal tunnel. I couldn't get coins out of my wallet and I had to spill them into my hand to pick them up, I dropped at least one item every day and I couldn't twist any bottle tops off of bottles. So I had my EMG and it was positive and I had both hands done. I don't know how accurate the test for Ulnar nerve problems, but it sure sounds to me like you have it. I am still having minor weakness and my surgeries were July 20 & October 26, 2005.

Hi, I might be able to offer some help and support on this one. I too had negative EMG tests but my consultant was adament that my condition was Carpul Tunnel Sydrome, I too have numbness in all 5 fingers, including those which are operated by the Ulner nerver (little finger and ring finger). I asked my consultant about this, and he said that is can sometimes be a referred numbness or another problem in the ulner nerve in the wrist or elbow.

The only real way of knowing if it is CPT is by having the surgery performed. My consultant who is an orthopaedic hand and upper limb specialist advised me that over half of the tests come back as negative, as a rule of thumb and that the tests are not that accurate. He said that in all of the people who he operated on (which is thousands!), of those who have had negative EMG tests over three quarters of them who opted for surgery were right to have the operation, as CPT was the cause. On the other hand (parden the pun!), of those who had positive EMG tests, over half of those that had the operation did not require the operation. The reason why my consultant performs this operation on those who have had negative EMG results is because it is a relatively quick proceedure, from the anaesthetic entering to being wheeled out of theatre, total of 14.5 minutes, and it is not a very expensive procedure to carry out. Also, it is one of those surgeries that has no guaruntee of working, so he feels that the patient has nothing to loose, but potentially a better lifestyle to gain!

I had my operation here in the UK (not as bad as some may think!) under Local Anaesthetic, and watching eagerly. My nerve tests were negative and my consultant advised me that my CPT was one of the worst he has seen for a number of years, in someone so young (I hit 30 this year), the tunnel was very tight and compacted, proof of CPT.

Tests are not 100% accurate, so if you feel you still have CPT, which it sounds like, keep pushing.
    Hope this helps!

    Re: Negative Emg,,,please Help

Wow,,you guys have a lot of information, but I do have an update.
I asked my neurologist to refer me to a hand specialist, since that is where my problem mainly was. If he didn't feel like it was my hands, I wanted him to refer me back to the neuro doctor and go from there, just to kind of rul it out.
Well, then hand specialist looked at my hands, did a few range of motions and I have ulnar neuropathy. I was suprised at how much pain I was in until after he moved up my arms to my elbows and I almost couldn't take it. I am having an MRI done on both arms and hands, so I am excited about that.
At least I know what is wrong, so that is a step in the right direction for me.
All of your information has been helpful, and I will see what the MRI shows.
It is difficult to be 32 and even the task of brushing your teeth becomes difficult, so I have learned to take my time and deal with it.
Let's keep our fingers crossed on this one, and hopefully get some kind of surgery done so that I can get back my normal routine...
