Tightness and muscle spasms in right hand - Could this be Carpal Tunnel?

Hey everyone,

I am fairly new to these boards and have been seeking advice on a variety of health issues that have popped up this year due to extreme anxiety at a new job. One issue I am now dealing with is apparent carpal tunnel or RSI in my right (dominant) hand.

This started after I spent numerous hours every day for about 3 weeks playing on a video game console (I work in that industry) and as such my right hand will go for weeks where it feels weak, individual fingers will have aching pains in the joints when typing or bending, the overall hand will be sore, or most recently I will have muscle spasms in my thumb and ring finger after small movements that require fine motor skills.

All these symptoms seem to come and go week to week, I do not have the typical burning sensations in my wrists nor am I waking up with my hands asleep, which is why I'm on here asking if anyone can relate to any of this.

Any advice is very appreciated!

Of course, I'm no doctor, but my carpal tunnel presented as numbness and tingling in my hands. And my wrist does start hurting when I try to do lots of handwriting, like writing a letter. Mine is considered "mild to moderate" carpal tunnel. My father had lots of pain with his, which was severe enough for surgery. I guess the only way to know for positive is to get tested.

Re: Tightness and muscle spasms in right hand - Could this be Carpal TunnelP?

I've had surgery on my left hand once and twice on my right hand. Scar tissue from the first operation squeezed the nerve making a second surgery necessary. In between the surgeries on my right hand I would have shooting pains. Like someone putting a needle in my hand. Sort of like the needle coming from inside my hand and heading out. I discussed this with both a physical therapist and the doctor who did my second surgery. He was a hand specialist, whereby the first surgery was in another state and done by an orthopedic doc. What my PT and hand specialist told me was that my brain sent out messages that were going to the wrong place. The nerve was being interferred by the pressure put on it and so the message would wind up in an area of my hand that it wasn't supposed to be. Does this help with the muscle spasm question? As for the weak feeling, oh yes, that is typical of CTS. I found some yoga exercises just for carpal tunnel. I also found accupressure exercises for it too. I also read that good posture, not being overweight, eating right and getting enough sleep will help CTS. My PT gave me hand stretching exercises and some hand strengthening exercises to help build up the strength in my hands. All helped. While I'm still working on all of this, every little bit helps. Good luck.

My CTS symptoms involve tightness in my forearms and a very bad deterioration of my fine motor skills, so yes you could have CTS. Go get a nerve test to know for sure. My nerve tests show 4.32ms latency and equates to moderate CTS in both hands. Getting surgery later this month, praying that it gets better, good luck! Go to doc NOW while it's early. I'm 27 and my surgeon says I am lucky to be getting this done early.

I had the signs of CTS, numbness, forearm tightness etc. Asked my doc, his reply was "yes it's CTS" w/o testing. Wearing a splint at night helped. Assumed it was minor/moderate CTS for about 5 years. This past summer I've had trigger points throughout my upper body. When these got treated & released, the "CTS" vanished. I wore an "M brace" for several years when I typed or sewed. I haven't had it on in months. Before you go under the knife, try some deep tissue body work. If that doesn't help, try the M brace (little 'L' shaped plastic w/a wristband) it does help open the tunnel.
