Return to therapy

I am a 19 year old college sophomore with spastic diplegia and a newly sprained right ankle. As a result I will have to start physical therapy when I return home for break. I am a bit apprehensive as I have not been to any therapy in 10+ years. I never do any sort of stretching on my own but will sometimes go to the gym and run on the treadmill. As a result of not stretching my legs are very tight with little range of motion and could probably benefit from some proper exercising.

Has anyone returned to therapy after an extended hiatus? How did it go?

Hi Jill,
I am in the Northeast also! I just finished PT after not doing it for six years. It was great to find out what I was doing wrong when I was walking and how to correct it. I found out the causes of certain problems (tightness, weakness, tone, or combos of those), what can be fixed, and what cannot be. I was very lucky to find a great therapist who was very motivated and recently educated. If you go somewhere and do not feel like they understand you or know what to do, go somewhere else. I think a lot of therapists are quite baffled by CP since it is uncommon and always different with each person. It is not an easy road but at least you want to go, are ready to go--now get out there and do it. You will feel proud of yourself and you will get stronger physically at the same time.
