Singulair for my 4-1/2 yr old son

    Hi,

My 4yr 8months son has asthma. He usually gets it with cold, running nose and sneezing, he coughs a lot when he has asthma. Is it allergic asthma? His doctor gave him Singulair samples to try. My question is, on the singulair sample packet, its written that it is 'For seasonal allergies'. Is it used for controlling asthma? Does the same singulair treatment works for both asthma and seasonal allergies or is the treatment different? Has anyone used this for their 4-5year old kids? How did it work? What were the side effects that your kids got? I think its for long term use, does my son have to use it for years together?

We use albuterol for him, but I think he doesn't take it in properly. When we use spacer, he does it so fast that it does not work. What suggesions can you give, please help.

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Singulair for my 4-1/2 yr old son

It has worked very well for my daughter combined with Zyrtec after having her tonsils and adenoids removed. Since birth she had a lot of problems with bronchitis and asthma. In her case, she is allergic to pollen and this will cause an asthma attack. She had her tonsils and adenoids were removed to help with problem ( she had 3 bouts tonsilitis within 6 months along with ear infections and tonsils were constantly swollen. ). In a about a month I will have to call her ENT dr. and have her put back on these meds until next winter. I hope it works for your son.

My 4 year old has been on a Singulair Zyrtec combination since she was 2. We use it year round. What you describe sounds more like cough varient asthma. These kids don't present with the typical wheezing but have sometimes violent bouts of coughing. We also do Pulmicort neb treatments nightly.

She has not had any side effects that I have noticed. It works great for us and has cut down on the number of attacks she has had. We still do neb treatments as the spacers have never worked for her. It is too hard for her to figure out how to breathe with them. The neb treatments work very well in keeping it under control. We also use Xopenex instead of Albuterol as it doesnt have the same awful side effects. Good luck to you and I HTH

Re: Singulair for my 4-1/2 yr old son

My daughter is 6. She has allergic asthma and has been taking singulair and Advair for several months now. She also has an Albuterol inhaler for attacks and we use Xopenex in her nebulizer when needed. It HAS worked for her. She takes 5mg singulair once a day. The Advair is 250/50. We tried to go down to every other day on the singulair but she immediatly started with her cough and so we went back to everyday and it cleared up.....

Did the doc do any tests? My daughters doc did allergy test and pulmonary function tests. She was allergic to Oak, Pine, Red Cedar, a mix of grasses and a few weeds......... Her pulmonary function tests were not to bad but after giving her a nebulizer treatment her scores improved by 12% which indicates asthma. If you think it IS allergic asthma.....ask for allergy tests. My daughter didn't even cry. It was fast and painless.

We have been pleased with the singulair/advair combination for her treatment and haven't seen any side effects. When she first started she was having headaches but she also had a sinus infection. The headaches have gone away after a round of antibiotics for the infection so I believe it was NOT from the meds but the infection. I hope the Singulair helps your son.
