11yr old "doesn't feel well," is cold at night (even summer), and uses down comforter

Was wondering if any of you have suggestions for an 11-year old girl, 95 pounds, about 5 feet tall, who complains (for the past 3-4 months) that she "doesn't feel well" quite often. She says it is all over. Complains of it mostly when I'm tucking her in bed at night. This is a change --> She is cold at night, and uses down comforter over her blankets, even this summer. (Her room is the hottest room of the house, plus she has a plastic mattress cover, and her sister shares her room, who is not cold.) She doesn't have a temperature. I don't think she is depressed.

She is coughing now some from mild asthma, which we are treating, but she was complaining of being tired and not feeling well, cold, etc.. long before she started this asthma episode.

My husband and I feel we need to listen to her more, and feel that this is not psychosomatic, as we once thought. The other day she told us she didn't feel well...we just thought maybe she was making it up, and that night, she vomited in her sleep b/c she was coughing so hard. It makes us think that she is probably not making up this other separate issue.

The issue I am bringing to you is unrelated to her asthma, as she only gets asthma beginning in Sept. She started complaining of these symptoms during the summer.

Please help. May sound silly, but it is a little worrisome. I'm wondering if she could have low iron. Why would she be so cold at night and need a down comforter in a hot room? I don't understand. No fever.

Not to sound harsh but OMG take the girl to the doctor or specialist. Something is apparently wrong. Have her blood checked. If her ped doesn't know then take her to someone else. A child who is eleven isn't going to lie and say things like that. Please keep us posted on her health. Call the doctor tomorrow and insist she be seen and tested.

Re: 11yr old "doesn't feel well," is cold at night (even summer), and uses down comforter

Hi Kippy. I had something similar when I was a young teenager. I just didn't feel well, slept even more than the average teenager, (to the point where I was napping in the day and not really hanging out at night. I would go to bed!) and was generally cold at night through all seasons. I also had dark circles and a lack of energy. Everyone kept asking me if I was depressed. My mom finally decided to take me to a doctor and guess what? I was anemic! They put me on slow release iron (I had horrible constipation problems from everything else) and BCP's to lighten my period.

You're daughter may be a little young for this, but part of my problem was my very heavy periods. I have generally low blood pressure/volume and was also always quite underweight for my age and height, so very heavy periods caused me to be anemic. My mom never believed me as to how heavy my periods were. My first periods at 12 and 13 I would soak a tampon in 30 minutes and kept telling her I needed the Super Plus Absorbency. (Which only held a coupe hours. I had to wear tampons with pads.) But she never believed me, which was kind of ridiculous because she had always had very heavy periods and so did all the other women in her family and they all had anemia problems too. I guess she just assumed that since I didn't take after them in looks and size I hadn't inherited anything else either. After being on BCP's for a few months I quit the iron and have never had a problem since. I was never anemic in pregnancy and my periods have been much lighter since having Cal.

Anyway, you may want to ask her about her flow if she's had her period already. If not, I'd get her checked out anyway. I've heard anemia is really alot more common in preteens/teens than you'd think!

I would take her to her pediatrician or gp. most likely it is low iron but your never know. It could be anything. How is her eating?
(BTW, 11 yr olds do lie and make up things)

I don't think she is though, I would take her soon as you can and request a complete blood work on her. Most likely he will do so anyway but incase ask for it. She probably is fine but i would take her.

Let us know how it goes, Please..

Thanks guys. She has not started her period yet. I'll take her to the doctor for bloodwork. My parents are hypochondriacs, so I tend to lean toward the opposite...sometimes it takes someone with a board banging me over the head ...

I'll schedule an appt. today for this week. If you guys have any other ideas in the meantime, let me know. Thanks.

I took her to the pediatrician today. They said it is probably just hormones, but they did a full CBC anyway. Results should be back tomorrow.

Thanks. Her comforter is one that I purchased from an allergy magazine. It's a synthetic version and supposed to be non-allergenic (not sure of the correct term). Maybe it is still part of the problem though.

Also, the results from CBC and urine test came back. All within normal limits. So I'll just assume it's hormones, and move on... Thanks!

Hi. I had one more question... Pediatrician did a full CBC to test hormones and anything else. Would this CBC show cortisol and adrenaline levels?

I read a little about the Adrenal Stress Profile, which is a "well-documented lab test" to evaluate how well your body is handling stress. My daughter seems tense a lot, and I'm wondering how find out if these levels (cortisol and adrenaline) are within normal limits.

She has some bone defects, including spine and ribs. Her heart has always been a concern for us, even though she was required to have an ultrasound of her heart at the age of 2, and everything showed up fine anatomically. I'm wondering from my reading if it's possible for her heart to be contributing to her constant "tenseness." None of our other children are tense at all. She's been like this for as long as she's been complaining of not feeling well...
