| 13 yr old daughter vomiting and pain for 6 weeks
I need help...Im really concerned. My 13 yr old daughter has been vomiting with pain for six weeks. Six weeks ago my daughter started vomiting the day after she spent an entire day at an amusement park riding rollercoasters. We thought she was either coming down with the flu or was nauseated after riding so much. One week later she was no better, vomiting constantly after eating and drinking and was admitted to the hospital by her pediatrician to give her IV fluids and to check for other problems. Blood tests, urine test, and abdominal CT showed normal. Something was said about dialated bile ducts, but further tests showed no problems. My daughter's symptoms seem to become more intense, vomiting after eating or drinking, constant hiccups where vomit or bile come up into her mouth, upper abdominal pain that started on the right side, but seem to be across the entire upper area at this time with pain going into the lower back and in the tops of her legs. She also started having severe headaches with this as well as terrible constipation and sometimes a rash across her cheeks that feel very hot. She has had no fever and no diarreah. Her doctor referred her to Riley Childrens Hospital/IU for GI specialists to check her out. She was given IV fluids and had numerous test ran, Head CT, Abdominal Xray, EKG, Upper GI, Liquid Gastric Emptying, Ultrasound on Liver, Pancreas, and Gall bladder, more blood tests and urine tests. Once again nothing was found. We left Riley Hospital and came back home where she continues to feel bad (having vomiting, nausea and pain 24 hours a day) and goes into what seems like attacks....severe pain in upper abdomen, lower back, migraine headache and pain in the upperlegs. The pain is so intense you cant even touch her of help her. No medications seem to help with pain and the dr's dont want to use narcotics. So now we are seeing the GI specialist that is part time in our area....she ran a couple more tests, blood, hida scan, upper endoscopy and found very little....biopsy showed epstein barr (but they cannot say how long ago this could have occurred), some but very little gastritis and esophagitis (sorry for the misspellings). But basically no real answers to the problem. This doctor started my daughter on some new meds to hopefully help. This was no help either, my daughter was still sick, no better. I had been monitoring everything my daughter was vomiting and I noticed that food she had eaten hours before or even the day before was still being vomited hours later. However sometimes she would feel like she needed to vomit right after eating and would empty her entire stomach. She also has terrible constipation, very small, hard, dark pebble like stools and needs enimas frequently just to be able to go at all. I shared this with her doctor who feels like vomiting "old food" is a clue and feels like she does have delayed gastric emptying (oddly enough, even with all the tests that were performed, no one ordered a solid gastric emptying test). She now feels like my daughter has post viral gastro paresis with visceral hypersensitivity (once again sorry for the misspellings) and started meds to treat this and removed all solids from my daughters diet.....well 2 weeks later no change....i just dont know what to do....she said she could be like this for a while. Are we on the right track or are they missing something? I keep feeling like it is something else. My daughter has always been very healthy and very active and now she is nearly home bound. Anyone have anything to share???? Please help!!!

hi i dont really know if ill be much help. a few yrs ago i got the flu. it started off as the usual flu but then i started vomiting a few days after, well this didnt stop for over 2 weeks!!! for the first few days it was physical, then for the next while it got mental and got more severe in the night times. now im not sure if that follows ur daughters pattern or not, but i ended up in the hospital cause i ate and drank nothing for 2 entire weeks!!!! maybe a quarter of a cup of peylite a day just to live!! it was all in my head plus the feeling in my throat as far as gag reflex was constantly there!! now this may not be sounding fam to you but its the least i could help you on. the only thing im thinking is ur daughter has consumed some kind of bug thats running rampant and will slowly leave her body. Now does she throw up everyday? does she eat anything? do u find certain situations set it off??

Thanks for the reply Hayley....she is sick and hurting everyday. Sometimes days are better....sometimes nights....really no specific pattern. As of now she is strictly on liquids and Boost with Benefiber. Her doctor does feel this is viral related or at least started that way. These are the meds she takes: protonix 1/day for the gastritis/eshophegus, reglan & erythromycin 3x/day to help restart stomach production, zofran for nausea/vomiting (doesn't work), periactin and elevil 1x/night for migraines, pain, nerve therapy, and to help her sleep, and we alternate ex.strength tylenol and advil every 4 hours. So far nothing seems to be working. I've just never seen anything like this before. Seems too intense and too severe. Im terrified were missing something.

I have a son who has cyclic vomiting syndrome....also known as abdominal migraines. He had most of his episodes when he was younger, he is 10 now. It took months to figure out what was wrong with him. I found it on the internet and brought it to the attention of the doctors. We put him on propranolol and prilosec and he did great. It does take a lot of persistence, but you will figure it out. You can look up cyclic vomiting syndrome on a search engine and it should take you to the website for it. Read through some of the message boards, information and such. I hope this helps somewhat. Good luck!

i agree with what love said and i never thought of that even though my son had it!!! he would walk home from school but it only happened in the winter and he would vomit. the doc said it was from the sun and we took him to the eye doctor and she gave him tinted glasses and it helped alot! but also we had him checked too by a special. and we noted that frequently my son would get horrific migraines in class followed by dizzy spells and vomiting. pls let us kow what happens and i know its hard not to worry.

Thanks guys for sharing with me! We are seeing the doctor again Thursday....i will research that some more and mention it as well. I know that was something they considered but felt her symptoms were not consistent with that. I will keep you posted.

get her tested for celiac disease right away...vomiting for so long is a symtom of this disease..she might have an intolarence to gluten.

I'm sure you looked into this but did they check her for a small incision in her intestine? Sometime if there is a blockage even a small one it can push toxins into the system and make her violently ill. Please keep us posted. We are very concered for your child. She'll be in my prayers.

SAH,
Some interesting and helpful information being posted here.
But if you feel the situation is desperate and that something is being "missed" have you thought of travelling out of state to a different pediatric hospital? If you don't get some answers soon you may want to consider taking your daughter to another pediatric center. [removed]
I'm not saying that Riley's isn't good or that the care you daughter is getting now isn't thorough but if things don't improve soon you have, if need be, other options to investigate.

Reason: Do not post others materials - there are copyright laws to be concerned about. Thank you!

SAH,
I had posted a list of the Best Hospitals in the U.S. (for pediatrics) as possibilities for you (other than Riley's) but I accidentally breached Board guidelines by mentioning the source plus copyright material.. (I'm so sorry Mods!)...
If you are thinking of taking your daughter to another hospital, a few considered as some of the best are: Children's Hospital (of Phila) Children's Hospital (Boston), Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore), Texas Children's Hospital (Houston)
Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, and Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital (Cleveland)
There are others, but I hope you find some answers for your daughter without feeling you might need to take the more drastic measure of travelling out of state.
Best of luck,
zuzu xx

I agreed with previous posts - cyclic vomiting and seeing another children's hospital. I cannot believe they are letting her go on with this for so long without persistant testing. You don't really mention how far apart the testing has been, but that she's had 2 upper GIs and not one lower. If something is blocked lower - it will force everything out the top including bile. Also - my son has migraines (not the abdominal kind which is the cyclic vomiting syndrome). And during his episodes of projectile vomiting and pain - there is rarely anything we can do to help him. Luckily we can usually knock him out with a codeine and he sleeps through the rest of it.
We are all wishing the best for your daugher and pray the find the resolution soon. Not sure where you are, but there are wonderful children's hospitals in the southeast too!
