    Help me disguise the Medicine

My 5 yr old takes medicine like a pro...normally. The Dr. prescribed Milk of Magnesia and she is having a really difficult time getting it down (don't blame her actually). We got the cherry flavored hoping that it would work but she says it is nasty and gags on it. We have tried putting in yogurt, juice and applesauce. Anybody have any other ideas for me? Thanks for your help.

If for constipation - my doc let me give my son dark Karo syrup. It tasted better and helped with this problem. And he didn't have to take that chalky stuff again.
    Hope this helps.

Contact your doctor to see if he can suggest something else. I know miralax is a prescription strength laxative that acts the same way. Otherwise maybe you can try another flavor. DS is 23 months and we use the cherry with an oral syringe. Squirt it in the back of the mouth so it doesn't hit the tongue. He hates the unflavored stuff. I think they also make chocolate flavored.

Ms. Twiddle; You've been on my mind. I hope all is going well. I have no experience with Milk of Magnesia, but is there a plain kind or maybe mint that you could mix with some cocoa powder or chocolate milk? Maybe try some ice cream with a blender and mix it in like a milk shake. I hope this helps. Mrs. B

Re: Help me disguise the Medicine

Thank you as usual, Mrs. B. She doesn't normally like choc milk but we tried
anyway. Didn't tell her the med was in there (this time it was an antibiotic) and she gagged. Poor baby. I want to cry everytime I give it to her. I went back to the Glycolax for the constipation. She can get that down in a glass of juice. But this antibiotic is rough. The doctor called today and said that they are running out of antibiotics to use. She is allergic to Sulfa and has built up an immunity to penicillin. It breaks my heart to make her take this stuff. I have even broken my own "rules" and tried bribing her. And, tonight, for the first time in all of this, she asked me, "Why are they doing this to me?"
It about cut my heart in two. Anyway, sorry to unload on you. I just don't know how we can make it for 9 more doses. Wish us luck, okay? Talk to
you soon and hope all is improving in your house. MsTwiddle

    mstwiddle:
Have you tried zithromax - we have alot of antiobiotic allergies and this is one of the few that my kids can take. It actually tastes good according to my daughter. Also some pharmacists can "flavor" antiobiotics - you just have to ask in advance.

Ms. Twiddle; I feel your pain and hers. What about trying to mix it in with a fruit smoothie ?? Does she like strawberry ? Hang in there and don't feel bad about the bribe, she has gone through so much that she deserves something special for being a trooper. You are in my prayers. Mrs. B

My 2 year old doesn't take meds well. I make him a smoothie with yougurt, fruit, milk, and juice. I just use whatever I have on hand. He loves them and never notices the meds I slip in.

Re: Help me disguise the Medicine

Well, for those of you that suggested the smoothies...THANK YOU. So far, so good.
I also found that smashing up a frozen Big Stick hides the taste pretty well. Happy Mother's Day to all.

Re: Help me disguise the Medicine

Mrs. B. Thank you, as usual, for your response and support.

Also, for anyone else fighting the nasty medicine problem. The smoothies worked
for antibiotics but my daughter always could taste the Milk of Magnesia. I finally just
put it straight into chocolate syrup and gave it to her that way. Hope this helps someone out there.
