    Question bruises?

I noticed last night that my 8 year old son had some strange bruises on his thigh. He is a wrestler so bruises are not uncommon but these were different. There was a patch of about 8 and they were all the same size (size of a pencil eraser), red and not painful when I touched them. I checked the rest of his body and found some more scattered on his legs that were the same size and weren't painful. They almost look like a rash but they are not bumpy or itchy and my son has no idea how or when they appeared. Any thoughts on what they could be? They just don't seem to me to be the normal bruising that he gets.

    take him to a doctor!
i don't want to be alarmist, but, a lot of bleeding disorders cause strange bruises.
i had tiny pinprick bruising on my legs and it turned out i had low platelets.
if he doesn't know how he got them, it's better to be safe.
it could be as simple as he needs more iron.
i hope that it's nothing, but no doctor is going to blame you for being cautious.

    Hi lilihob,

Did you first go to your GP to get his/her opinion? Do you see a hematologist? Can a GP check for low platelets? I have bruising from varicose vein surgery that never went away. They say the bruises stayed there so long that it stained my skin, so what I'm seeing is a pigment change. I also have one pinkish bruise that has never gone away (it's been 9 months since surgery)...still a little painful if you press on it. My GP seems to think that's normal.

    yes, i saw my G.P.
yes, they can check for a lot of blood prolems,(iron levels, platets etc), with a simple blood test called a F.B.C.(full blood count), it can be done in as little as 20 mins.
i saw a consultant haematologist, who put me on steriods etc, i'm now in remission.
yes, i still bruise easily although i have "normal" blood now, the veins are just more susceptable to bruising. if i scratch myself lightly, the "pinpricks" show up.
    i hope that helped.
i think your G.P is probably right, that area is probably more fragile now. try arnica cream, or if you're in the u.k, lasonil ointment, fantastic for my bruises.
i should know, i bruise easily, and, i'm clumsy!
    t's mom, update please!!!

Is it possible that they might be insect bites? Some children will have a local reaction to bites without being itchy.

If he is a wrestler, perhaps it is possible that they could be bruises from fingers but if they are red I would expect them to be sore.

Update: I am a worry wart. : ) I had visions of blood diseases and transfusions and all that awful stuff but it turns out they were actually just normal bruises - probably from tiny little fingers in wrestling. They have sinced turn the normal black and blue and are beginning to fade. Thanks for the concern and advice..much appreciated.
