Post Sweet smelling urine in 4-year old

My 4-year old son has hade sweet-smelling urine as far back as I can remember. It smells like maple-syrup. Also, for the last year or so, he has lost 3 lbs. instead of gaining any weight. He weighs 32 lbs. According to his dr., he's 10% in height & weight on the growth charts. He never wants to eat and when he does eat, it's 2 or 3 bites and then he says he's full.

In all other respects, he is a normal 4-year old boy. His motor skills are fine, he has a great vocabulary and excellent speech patterns. He has a lot of energy. He doesn't have chronic illnesses; in fact, he rarely gets sick.

We are concerned and so is his dr. His dr. is researching Maple Syrup Urine Disease and is going to test his blood and urine. Also, he is going to screen him for diabetes.

Anybody know of any other reasons for the sugary-smelling urine and weight loss?

Yes, you need to have your child seen by a pediatric neurologist as soon as possible! Maple syrup Urine Disease is a Metabolic Disease, most Dr.'s do not know much about them. I suggest that you see a neurologist with a speciality in Metabolic Disease. Where do you live?

Thanks for the reply! I live in Va. My family dr. told me yesterday that he was going to consult with a few pediatric friends of his and with a pediatric specialist at Johns Hopkins since he didn't know enough about the disease. He wanted to research the disease and also find out from some pediatricians if there could be other reasons for the sweet smelling urine and the fact that my son is losing weight. They are also going to screen Jacob for diabetes, since I have diabetes and there is a history in my family of diabetes.

With you having diabetis I am surprised they didn't test him a long time ago. I am not sure when your doc plans to test him but since this can be done at the lab or clinic quite easily I would suggest you ask your doc to schedule it soon as in today or tomorrow. Yours sons health is far to important to let this go untreated and even though your doc is working on it I don't get the impression that he is working fast enough. Maybe I have the wrong impression but I think you need to pressure your doc to get the testing needed done ASAP. You know yourself that diabetis is not something to let go so just in case this is part of your son's problems get him checked ASAP.

They did test him a long time ago when he was born and again when he was about two years old. Actually, my dr. is working very quickly. We are going to the lab tomorrow for several tests. They couldn't do it today, because he has to fast for 12 hours before the tests. The dr. is ordering a comprehensive metabolic panel as well as several acid tests (i.e., ketoacidosis). We should have an answer by end of week. I'll let you all know what we find out.

Thank you so much for your concern.

    Hi Kristina,
Unfortunately the metabolic testing takes about a month for the results. I know because I went through it with my 3 year old and just last week with my 3 month old. good luck.
