Tonsils, Adenoids, Ear tubes affecting 4 year old speech?!

Hi all. A good friend of mine has an almost 5-year-old boy who has difficulties with his speech. Us that are close to him can understand him for the most part, but we even have difficulties at times. Mom has put him in speech classes through the public school. He has A LOT of energy and gets excited and begins to studder at times. I had suggested to her to see an ENT specialist and they did. That doctor recommends removing tonsils and adenoids (feels it will significanly improve his speech), and also recommends ear tubes being placed. We are trying to find out information on the tubes. He has not really had very many ear infections in the past, although he has had *fluid* at times. Her questions are how will tubes affect swimming, hearing, etc. She is looking for info on both pros and cons of ear tubes. If anyone has any personal experience, please let us know! Surgery is set up for May 2. Thanks so much!

Re: Tonsils, Adenoids, Ear tubes affecting 4 year old speech?!

Tubes are wonderful. My DD just had them put in in December. It was the best thing we ever did. She is 19 months old and delevoping mental very well for her age. She talks so well for her age. She has always had problems with her ear and having fluid in them. Then she started having alot of infections. I was really starting to get worried. The fluid wasn't going away in between infections. Then the infection started getting more ferquent. I was getting worried that she was going to start having hearing problems. Imaga having fluid in your ears all the time. Its going to make everything sound funny. Which means she isn't going to understand what we stay right. Which means she isn't going to talk right. You know like when your ears get water in them or when the are clogged when you are sick. Thats how they feel all the time. I also know with ear infections (not sure about just fluid on the ears) that it can cause hearing loss. My sisters little boy has some mild hearing loss from so much going on with his ears. Since my DD got her tubes things have been wonderful. NO more fluid or infections. There at the end we were getting ear infections every two weeks. The tubes are going to help that fluid drain out and that is much better for him. I highly recommend the tubes. With swimming and baths they have to wear ear plugs. They don't want water getting in their ears while they have tubes. A little doesn't hurt but they don't want in pouring into there ears. Like if you dunk them under water in the pool. Our DD loves doing that when we go swimming, but we can't know cause of the tubes. As far as the hearing goes that is going to help his hearing. He will be able to hear things the way they are suppose to be heard. Like is said my sisters boy has tubes too and he is doing great also. No more fluid or infections. The surgery is also easy. We went in at 8 and were leaving by 9. The surgery itself took 10 mins. Checking her in and recovery were the longest part. We left got breakfast(cause they can't eat or drink before the surgery like 8 hours or something like that)came home took a nap. She got up and you woundn't have known she had surgery that day. She acted like she always does and so did my sister little boy and he is 2. I wish your friend the best with the decision. I hope this information help you.

Re: Tonsils, Adenoids, Ear tubes affecting 4 year old speech?!

If he's having problems with his ears, its possible that's messing up his hearing and therefore deplaying his speech development.
My best friend's daughter had ear infections all the time as an infant, and when she was deplayed with learning to walk, she got tubes in her ears and started walking almost immediately afterwards. The problems with her ears had her balance off and that was why it took her so long to walk. I know the 2 situations are a bit different, but its possible that's the reason.

My son had speech only I could understand. He had several ear infections and after the tubes, no more ear infection and everyone could understand him! It was a double fix.
