    6 year old urinary pain

I wasnt sure whether to post here or on the urology board. i'll try here first.

OK my daughter (6 yr old) is allergic to most bubble baths, there is one she can have and doesnt give her issues. We discovered this after a trip to the ER a few years back when she screamed when she went to the bathroom. Her urine tested that there was some bacteria but wasnt sure what exactly it was so they sent me home with a script and said my pedi will call the next day with actual results. Those results were negative for UTI, they called us in to exam her and somehow figured out she must have had soap get up in there, she also doesnt have a fever at all. This same thing has happened quite a few times, so I havent taken her in. Just kinda let it run its course, it still hurts her to pee but she empties her bladder everytime and in a few days it goes away.

So this past month it happened and it lasted about 2 days and went way, she started again last night (friday) grabbing herself, has to pee right then and there, and goes, not much, but goes and says it burns everytime. She goes like every few minutes now. She is drinking cranberry non stop since last night. we went out to dinner and she laid in the booth saying her head and belly hurt, she ate but not alot. Now she is holding a bowl, getting ready to throw up and her head hurts. Still no fever. What is this? is it a UTI? Her dr told me unless she has a fever, its not a uti. I am so confused.

    thank you

    Amy

Re: 6 year old urinary pain

I have had cronic UTI's since I was about 4 years old, and have never once had a fever with it. It is not true that you MUST have a fever. I am now seeing a urologist, and he has helped a lot. I would advise finding a different doc...maybe even a urologist, and get a second opinion...there is definately something going on there. It sounds exactly like me at her age, I was also unable to take bubble baths.

I think you should take her to a specialist. I also have had MANY UTI's and no fever. Have they checked her kidneys? Maybe you can find a pediatric urologist. Also did they do a sterile urine culture also? Bloodwork?
I have also had many kidney infections and they can do bloodwork to check this. I feel so bad for your daughter, I know how painful and miserable this can be. I hope you get some answers soon. Keep us posted.

Re: 6 year old urinary pain

I had the plan to take her today after her have another round of feeling like she was going to throw up and she oddly complained about her back hurting when she sat in her stiff wooden chair. I discussed taking her today with my husband and she over heard us talking and screamed at us that she is NOT going to the dr's. She is with my mom today due to school being out for veterans day and my mom said she says it doesnt hurt. does it really not hurt or is she just saying that cause she doesnt want to go to the dr?

    ARGH!!

She probably doesn't want to go to the doctor. My son does this all the time.
I would take her anyway. When I had kidney infections the back pain got pretty severe but started as an ache.

Also nausea, vomiting, diarhea are all symptoms of a kidney infection as well.

Re: 6 year old urinary pain

I realize this response is 6 days after the last posting but I feel I must give my input into your daughter's urinary pain.

You MUST take her to her ped. whether she has a fever or not. My daughter (6 yrs old) has recurrent UTI's & kidney infections (she does not always run a temp when infected) due to reflux/duplicated system. I am not suggesting this is the problem with your daughter, what I am trying to say is that symptoms of UTI vary so much from child to child/person to person.

My main concern with your daughter is the fact she cries (complains) when she urinates and has begun complaining of back pain. Burning and pain with urination is not normal. I understand your daughter's desire not to go to the doctor, mine is the same way because of her fear of the unknown. Besides that she has been poked and prodded so much she is really kinda tired of it.

Cranberry juice is good, but WILL NOT cure a UTI. Antibiotics are needed. Please take her in as soon as possible (if you haven't already) to have a urine test done. Especially since she has complained of back pain. That IS a symptom of kidney involvement.

Oh one more thing...no more bubble baths. Bubble baths are very unforgiving on girl's urinary tracts. Something I have found that lessens my daughters recurrent uti problems is no baths. She takes showers. Once in a while she will take a bath...but only as a relaxing soak...never to clean herself.

Good luck and I hope your little girl is feeling better.

    Angela
