Child with Anxiety?

Hi All!
I've posted here before for myself and now I'm looking for info for my child. I have always struggled with anxiety but last year, was able to get put on Zoloft, was on 50 mg for about 9 months and have safely, with exercise, weaned myself off of it with no side effects. That being said, I now have a child who appears to be showing signs of anxiety, and he's only 8! He's fearful about death, the sun burning out because it's a star and all stars burn out, the end of the world etc. Or he will simply say, I feel worried about something but I don't know what it is. Having anxiety myself, I know exactly what he's feeling and my heart aches for him! Luckily, because I know what he's going through and he's so verbal about it, I can get him the help he needs so he doesn't experience a lifetime of worry!!!
All that being said, has anyone had experience with this? I emailed his pediatrician to get her thoughts. Would they put him on meds? Suggest cognitive behavioral therapy? It breaks my heart that he worries so much at just 8 years old when his life should be so carefree!

Re: Child with Anxiety?

My daughter has had it from an even younger age but peaked during high school. She has extreme fear of EVERYTHING from a very young age and we just kind of dealt with it but when she started high school the panic attacks set in. She is now on medication and does anxiety/OCD therapy every week, so it is a combined effort. I would definitely get him into a mental health group that specializes in CHILDREN and take their advice as far as medication. I personally think 8 is a little too young BUT I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL.

Good luck and please keep me posted. It does get better. So hang in there!
