I have been sick a lot lately

I have been having a lot of problems with my stomach. I know that I have reflux problems but I don't know if that is what is making me sick. My question is could this have more to do with the stronger patch I am on? I feel that I maybe I could go back down to 75 since I have been changing the patch at 48 hours, as before I was using 2 x 50mic/grams/hr patches changed at 1 1/2 day intervals for 3 days, and now that I put on a 100 and change to another every 2 days I would be getting a higher dose. I do feel that I need the pain relief but I have felt a bit dizzy with the new patch on. I seem to get suddenly hot like a flush and then after a while I want to be sick. After being sick I sometimes am ok and other times I have been sick all evening. I have been sick today and was also sick 2 days ago. does anyone think it could be the patch or is this just a virus? I will go and see my doctor tomorrow but I wondered if anyone hear had been affected by a stronger medication. I have been using patches now for some time and never had a bad reaction from them before, only recently it seems.

Hey Allan! I am sorry to hear you are feeling bad but I am glad to hear that you were able to change your patch schedule. I haven't been feeling very well myself lately and am wondering the same thing. I have stomach issues and almost no energy. I am experiencing ups and downs just like you. I recently started taking a super complex B vitamin to see if it would help boost my energy level. Hope you feel better soon;0)

It sounds as if you're having a reaction to too much med Alan. I would definitely talk to your Doc. When you move to a 48 hour schedule, your BPL stays much higher. So changing to a shorter time frame, and increasing the amt, is a double whammy.

Hope you start to feel better.

    Regards,

    Ex

The 100 patch was definitely to strong for me so I am reducing down to try 75 for a bit. I hope this has not put my system off the patch altogether, I don't want to have to go looking for another substitute. I hate feeling like this.
    Allan.

Re: I have been sick a lot lately

It seems like it is a reaction to too much fentanyl in your body. I had a pretty bad overdose from going 25mcg to 50mcg and it was horrendous. My doctor almost took me off of the patch all together but that would have been horrible pain so I stuck it out and SLOWLY raised the dose as I adapted to the patch wearing and also as I could tell where my pain level was at. It takes approximately 15-20 days for the level of fentanyl to stabilize in your bloodstream and will go up and down during the time period.

    As for the stomach issues:
    1. it could definitely be constipation problems which the patch will ALMOST DEFINITELY cause meaning YOU HAVE TO TAKE SOMETHING TO COUNTERACT THIS. (either something like Miralax or a fiber supplement) <---Look Exec I'm actually recommending the fiber

    2. if you are constipated it can cause nausea, feeling ill, vomiting, acid reflux, etc so the faster you take care of this problem and get it under control the better you will be. I was having a lot pain in my upper abdomen, and acid reflux but found out that it was constipation from using the patch so I got on Miralax pronto and got things under control and I take it EVERY DAY.

Keep in mind that they make a 12mcg patch so you could possibly go down to 87mcg (75mcg + 12mcg) if you really want to wear 2 patches (don't know if your insurance would cover it though, make sure you check). Good luck man don't get too discourages, I thought that I was going to die from that overdose (I was SOOOOOOO SICK). Also get your testosterone checked which will help your depression if you haven't already done so.

Of course one thing at a time, one day at a time. (remember just for today ok)

    brian

p.s. One other thing to keep in mind when I was having all of the terrible pain in my upper right side, it was also a direct result of an anti-depressant that I was taking called Effexor. Keep in mind that anti-d's can cause alot of gastrointestinal problems or when interacting with your other meds. Make sure you check with doctor or pharmacist about possible interactions/side effects of your meds

Re: I have been sick a lot lately

Oh yes I was just throwing up heaps and everything I had came back up. I am still I bit woozy today so have been catching up on lost sleep this arvo. Nothing like nausea is there. Yuck. I need to get out a bit, but after the nausea goes. I have a new camera and want to go out somewhere nice to take some shots. I wish I could get out in the boat but I don't have anyone to help do the work of setting up, co-captain and cleaning up. Need a woman who loves the water and can cope with me. I am not as playful as I used to be. My ex and CP seemed to take a lot of that out of me. I shouldn't be negative should I.

    Hey Allan,

It could certainly be a response to the Fentanyl but I know you take high doses of anti inflammatories - I've meant to ask you about that because you have a lot of stomach problems anyway and they can cause major reflux and even ulcers and bleeding. I think you take Brufen? This is one of the worst offenders along with Voltaren. It would be worth asking your Dr for something like Mobic or Celebrex which is much more gentle on your tummy.

You could try stopping them for a few days and stick with Panadol and see if that helps. I can't take them at all anymore because I get hot sweats and reflux unless I eat them with a mountain of food.

If it's a response to the patch, try not to do too much while your body adjusts to the patch. Sweating can make it release faster, as you probably know.

What do you think? I wish you all the best and hope you're feeling better soon.

Re: I have been sick a lot lately

I have not been reacting very well to the patch I think maybe for longer than I thought. I have had nausea ongoing for quite a while and it suddenly got worse after increasing the strength. I have gone off the anti-inflammatory (Naproxan) a couple of times and have not taken any now for a couple of weeks. I also cut back on the endep and the stopped the anti-depressant I was taking in the morning (Lexapro). I did that a couple of weeks ago after another doctor mentioned that it was incompatible with the endep. I really just feel like stripping back all I can until I can eat again.
I will definitely see my main doctor tomorrow and if I can't I will have to go and see a specialist or I will just go to the hospital and tell them I can't keep this up as things are not working out with anything. Pain, nausea, depression, and this terrible neuropathy if I do to much bending or lifting. I can only hope the surgeon can fill me in on what is happening there. If not I will have to put my trust back in my doctors hands.
This is really s++++++++ if you know what I mean. I have gone from bad to worse. I think I might have to go back to Tramadol or try something else.
If anyone has any advice your welcome.
    Allan

To the point: Even though they aren't narcotics, some Rx have severe side effects when you suddenly stop them. You mentioned Lexapro. DO NOT STOP IT SUDDENLY!!! Your doctor should have assisted you in the ceasing of your RXs. I'd bet my firstborn that your problem is a result of stopping all these RXs...especially all at once. Wean off slowly one at a time. Trust me! I've been there with Lamictal and though it's not a narcotic, it sure packs a punch if you quit it suddenly!

Personally (and this isn't advise), I'd inch back on them until I began feeling better, then slowly wean off them one at a time. But that's just me. Call your doctor for questions.

Re: I have been sick a lot lately

I think this might be why you are so sick with stopping the Lexapro too. That was not a good thing to do. Look up anti-depressant withdrawal syndrome and you will probably see all of the symptoms that you are experiencing especially the nausea, vomiting, depression, etc. I would highly highly recommend NOT going off the fentanyl patch. If you want to experience SEVERE WITHDRAWAL then go ahead and do it but you will wish for death (trust me on this) especially if you were to stop it too suddenly. My doctor told me if I ever needed to get off the fentanyl patch it would be a 3-6 month withdrawal process of slowly titrating down. It is some seriously potent stuff.

Are you taking anything for constipation? You never even mentioned that even though I keep telling you about it. That can make you very ill as well. You need to get stabilized on your medications before making any more changes. You don't know if what you are experiencing are side effects or withdrawal. But I can tell you that anti-depressant withdrawal is HORRIBLE and the symptoms can last for weeks and possibly up to a month or two.

Re: I have been sick a lot lately

The biggest problem I found has been increase in the patch, I noticed within 8 hours the nausea started, then vomiting if I eat dinner that night. Then the next day I still have soreness. I have been careful giving up the other medications. I have gone off them as slowly as I could as I have taken a lot of different anti-depressants over 9 years and I always come down slowly when changing them. The lexapro was only a new addition anyway, I have only taken them for a couple months.
Sorry if I sounded like I was desperate last night, I was frustrated at how things have been. I just want it to stabilise so I can do something with my life rather than just seeing doctors.
All I can do at present is get my new monthly script of patches but come back down to 75 and try to settle my nausea problems. Then I can see if I can cope on that level while adjusting the anti-inflammatory and anti-depressants. And hope my stomach settles down. Some nausea has been a problem for a while and I have been off the naproxan before and used nexium or something like that, it is stronger for the reflux. I have sort of been here before. I just get disappointed. I have kept the constipation at bay ok, not a problem, just the nausea and I have always hated that.
PS I will check on a web sit about the Lexapro. Thanks Ityiws and Brian.

Re: I have been sick a lot lately

Allan, sorry you are feeling so bad. From experience I know that the constipation can also cause nausea and pain. It can make you feel pretty miserable. Most pain meds cause constipation which you already know. I use the generic Miralax. It works great. You mix it in a drink and it dissolves. No taste to it. No gritty grime in the glass. You take before bed and the next day everything is good again.

I take a bunch of meds too and are also post Gastric Bypass. So anything can upset my stomach. Because of the Bypass I can take something and get heart palpitations or severe hot flashes.

It is only one more thing added to feeling bad already.

I hope you are able to get right with your meds so they work for you. Hope you feel better.

Re: I have been sick a lot lately

Feeling a lot better tonight and have had some Buscopan that seems to have helped the nausea. So I actually had some food tonight. I do want to start doing some walking and swimming when things warm up again. Thanks for putting up with my complaints. I suppose us CPer's are good at that. I am not going to let this drag me down any longer so I will start trying to think about something other than pain. It is so easy to get dragged down when we are unwell. I hope something positive comes of it. It is all experience and I have had plenty of it.

I have had problems with nausea and I take bonine now, it helps quite a bit. I have been on other reflux meds but the bonine (it's over the counter) has worked the best for me. Hope you feel better soon;0)
