    Red face Fentanyl Patch Shortage??

Has anyone experienced a problem with pharmacys
Having a problem with a shortage with Fentanyl patches.
I am on the .75 mcg patches. For over a week now it's been
a nightmare trying to find a pharmacy that has these in stock
I call Walgreens, they tell me they can't give out the info on the
Phone as to where they have them or not, this was every Walgreens
in the area I live in. They said I have to just come into their stores
and see if they have them. Where I live is a big area, there is a Walgreens
On every corner. To drive around to check on these takes me all day and a lot of gas. I went to several, No luck. I even had one Walgreens Pharmacist tell me he had a few in stock, but couldn't give them to me because his regular customers would then be out. This wasn't just with Walgreens, but Walmart pharmacy as well. I usually get my prescription at CVS, but all of those were out as well. I called and went to Publix, Target and all were out. Some of them told me the computer systems are ordering them, And sometimes they get them, when promised, sometimes not. Something about a new system of doing things. I have been going through hell just to try and find my Patches.
It's got me scared. One pharmacy told me something about the DEA cracking down on how many each store gets.
Is anyone else having the same issues as me???

    Re: Fentanyl Patch Shortage??

Welcome! Sorry you are dealing with this. Agreed they often don't want to give out info on opiate stock over the phone, due to theft/security concerns. They may want to see you have a prescription before they give the info. I've not had a problem in my area getting info on the phone though.

I'm not on Fentanyl currently so I can't offer specific advice. However, you definitely need to be in touch with your doctor over this. They may need to change your dose or even your med. For example, if they had 25 mcg/hr patches in stock, your doctor could write you a prescription for 3 of those.

You may have to pay cash in that scenario though (or have your pharmacist try to get an override), as most insurance companies have a limit on the number of patches you can get in a period of time. If they are different strengths it may work though, as then they are two separate prescriptions, such as a 25 and a 50. So are you currently out of patches? Not a good thing to happen over a weekend, especially a holiday one. I hope you get this fixed soon.

I have heard some talk about stores only being allowed to order so much of each Schedule II med, regardless of their patient population. Not sure of the details though. Another thing you may want to do is try some independent pharmacies, and/or one associated with or near a hospital. They often have different suppliers and/or stock different meds. When my pharmacy hasn't been able to get something unusual for me I've had good luck using a mom & pop place near a hospital. Best wishes.

I get my 50 mg patch at CVS in NY state. I have not have them out, how terrible! I have had them switch manufacturer's because new customer liked the big patches with liquid in them. I told them I preferred the smaller ones and they order them for me. If you work with one pharmacist, maybe they can be sure to have them in stock for you. I hope they straighten this problem out for you, I can't imagine going without.

OMG... I do believe you live where I live! Your whole post is me & my situations with finding pharmacies that have the meds you are prescribed. We live in the same place with the same problems. What tortoisegirl said about going to a pharmacy close to a hospital is very correct. That's how I was able to get my last ones filled which are morphine sulfate tabs 30mg and oxycodone 10mg. I know if I have a problem on my next refills I'm gonna scream!!! I guess I'll try to find a mom & pop one if I can't get my refills at the same place this month.
Good luck & I DO understand your frustrations.

Thanks for your feed back .. I have been on these patches for about 15 years.
Same strength. Maybe and hopefully this has just been a freaky one time thing . I'll let you know if it happens again next month.
BTW" I finally did find a Walmart pharmacy that did tell me over the phone they did have them. Mind you this was after driving all over to about 15 pharmacys , plus the ones I called. This was a matter of 3 days work. Such a freaking nightmare.

Good luck to you as well..

I'm wondering, When you found the patches did you speak to the pharmacist about continuing to get your script there each month?

    Re: Fentanyl Patch Shortage??

Hi fed up, Im in texas & last month my regular pharmacy didnt have mylan fentanyl patches like always to fill my prescription so i called other stores in the same chain that could pull up my profile & no luck, no patches. Finally, a different pharmacy had the huge watson brand & i dont prefer them but was happy they were able to fill my rx. Later, the pharmacy manager of my regular pharmacy called & stated the reason they were unable to fill my prescription was because they werent ordered because she was on vacation. However, that didnt explain why 6 other pharmacies told me that they were out of fentanyl patches & i hope next month i dont have any difficulty & can get mylan as usual!

    Re: Fentanyl Patch Shortage??

WOW- I am sorry y'all are experiencing difficulties finding your rx'd fentanyl patches-if I had to drive around like that it would be awful-being my major pain generator is low spine/buttocks radiating through legs, and sitting drives pain level crazy bad.

I live in a small town, s.e., Al-and never have a problem thank goodness! The pharmacy I use, lil one, family owned, since 1899! A lot of generations of pharmacists-it's really a neat, quaint old timey place-I love it-they even have an ice cream bar, serve home-made ice cream.

Luckily, They always have what I need, and if I happen to get something new, and they don't have, they order, and it is there next day.

I have had a new and strange experience with my patches, though. I use the brand name Duragesic, been on the same dose, 100mcg,q48h. for several years now, about 2011ish

So, I picked them up about a week or so ago, time for monthly fills, I get home and notice the box says "Now with GREEN print on patch!". So, I think nothing of it, and apply one at scheduled time as usual. Now mind you, as I stated, been on this same dose since bout 2011. I am tolerant, and usually feel no type of "euphoria, etc.", I get excellent pain relief, and they just have worked really well for my wicked CP.

But there is something about these new type of Duragesic patches-they are WAAAYYYY strong!! About 12hrs later, I felt kinda like "drunk", for lack of a better word-I mean my speech was slurring and my husband was like-"hon, what did you take?" I told him, it's these new patches, they are really strong, so strong, that even after a rough day of doing a little too much housework, etc-(I usually suffer some intense bt pain)I am getting a little too much pain relief! What I mean by that is I am literally feeling no pain with these new type of Duragesic's. Infact, I use the matrix type, and I usually experience some intense bt pain(the cause of my insomnia)that keeps me from staying asleep, so almost every night(have no prob falling asleep,(also take 1mg Klonapin, and 5mg valium, as rx'd) just cant stay asleep due awakening from sharp/stabbing pain in low back radiating through buttocks on down-I mean terrible pain)So I take a 10mg oxycodone(I am allowed up to 3 a day for bt,but usually just take the one, because I need to sleep really bad.), but still struggle and most of the time cannot get back to sleep. Sleep deprivation is THE WORST.

I looked on the box, still contains the same amount of fentanyl(16.8mg)per patch, which is supposed to be releasing 100mcg per hour-but if you are a patch user=you know this can very-like my doc explained, when I complained about the nightly wakenings, and increased pain, sometime more than usual-he says the amount of medication being released will vary for any number of reasons-ie, the weather, moisture accumulating under patch-lots of reasons.

But, most of the time I get the much needed relief, at the dose I am at, even with the sometimes hassle I go through, like sometimes they dont want to stick, and sometime the bio-occlusive overlays I use get little bubbles under them causing the patch to get sucked up-to me it's worth the trouble-they have helped me more than any other of the LA meds, and I have tried the all.

I KNOW these patches are stronger, I FEEL IT, or at least releasing the medication more efficiently? I didn't "feel" the usual ones, but I know they are working because my pain was being managed quite nicely(40% to 60%)most of the time.

I am on patch#3, and still the same strong analgesia, I mean I know Fentanyl IS strong narcotic-but I do have a tolerance after all this time, obviously.

I have read the insert from this new box, and I can find nothing that I have not already read.

I have even reported this new effect of my same old dose, and(my PM Specialist) he believes that this is only temporary, and this matrix patch has not changed at all(?)

He even told me to start changing them every 3 days(72h) instead of 2(48h) and d/c the valium for the time being, happy I am getting more sleep w/o pain interruption) to let him know how I do.

I wonder if anyone else is using the brand name fentanyl patch(Duragesic) and has gotten this new (still matrix, though)with the new GREEN print that is directly on the part that sticks to skin, and if so, have you noticed anything different?

I am sincerely sorry for those of you having trouble getting your proper patch prescription filled completely, having to drive around like that, with the high price of fuel-is just not right! You don't need the added stress and hassle, I know it has already been said, but if you can find a smallish(mom n pop type) pharmacy I do believe you get better service.

I am not needing any bt at nite now for almost 8 days now-since I started this "new batch"-AND I am getting almost7 hours of sleep-I have not slept 7 hours straight since the accident!!

    Hope it gets easier..........
