Gone deaf with a head cold

I didn't know where to post this so am trying here, can anyone advise me please, I've had a cold for about a week and last Thursday my left ear blocked up (I think it needs syringing) and it was extremely painful. I put some ear drops in and after a while the pain stopped. It still felt odd and then on Saturday my right ear blocked up and was very painful overnight, so I couldn't sleep. Eventually it started making crackling noises in my ear and over several hours quite a lot of fluid came out. I haven't been able to hear the TV at normal sound and have had subtitles on! I still feel bunged up in my head, my nose is quite blocked and I am coughing a lot. Will my hearing come back when the cold symptoms go, as I'm starting to worry now? Many thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Check in with your GP as it sounds like you might have an infection. I hope it clears up soon!

Re: Gone deaf with a head cold

Hi thanks. I don't have a GP as I recently moved, I am waiting this out. Would this be harmful as most things I've read said this resolves on its own?

Re: Gone deaf with a head cold

It is your hearing and that's important. You could go to a clinic or urgent clinic if you don't have a GP.

Re: Gone deaf with a head cold

Well hearing seems to have improved very slightly but not back to normal, still pretty muffled so on Saturday I'm going to a clinic in my old town as there is nothing where I am now. hoping its nothing serious but may get something for it as I've not been taking anything so far.

Re: Gone deaf with a head cold

Fine thank you. I didn't have to go to the medical centre in the end as my ears cleared by themselves the day before!
