Fatigue after cold virus

I had a cold that started last Sunday night and finally has started to go away besides the congestion. Before this I hadn't been sick since 2015. I noticed that I've been very fatigued with this cold virus, but even so now that it's going away. Friday night I had some type of slight food poisoning and I still have some dull aches in my stomach. I tried doing some errands today, but when I got home I felt tired and stiff. Is this normal to still be this fatigued? I also have hypothyroidism so I'm wondering if this is a factor. I've been taking epsom salt baths because they relieve my muscles and I've been sleeping as much as I can. I'm not sure what else to do but it's starting to concern me....

Re: Fatigue after cold virus

Hi...sounds like a combo of things going on.
Firstly, how long have you been doing epsom salt baths, and how long is each duration?

Do you have a doctor you can see soon?

Re: Fatigue after cold virus

I've been taking Epsom salt baths for about a year now. Usually I take 1-2 baths a week for about 30 min, but since I was sick this week I've taken about 4 baths for 50 minutes. If this doesn't get better I will make a Dr. appt next week. I took an Aleve earlier and that seemed to help with the sore muscles.

The one thing I would suggest is to see the doctor anyway and have your vitamin D and b vitamins checked as well as iron and magnesium (because of your epsom baths).

Yes, some viruses that we contract can leave us fatigued for a very long time.

Hyprthyroidism can certainly cause fatigue and muscle issues, but a thorough blood panel could put light to something that might be overshadowed by what you already have.

Re: Fatigue after cold virus

Thank you for the advice! I think that's what my Dr. is going to do if I make an appointment is order me some blood work. I am long overdue to check my thyroid levels too. Do you think I might be getting too much magnesium?

Re: Fatigue after cold virus

I don't know, but it is absorbed through the skin and can raise levels. It's just something that is possible. If you are due to go...best to do so while you feel crappy. Sorry, but once we feel better the seriousness of it has dwindled a bit....sigh.

Have you found out why your muscles are so sore?
It's hard enough to have constant issues and then a virus that can make things feel much worse.

Please let us know the outcome.....feel better soon,

Sounds like vitamin D deficiency.. go to holistic dr to get testing before regular dr. He can do simple tests and suggest herbs that will be better. Flat cinannom (from Indian store) is great for colds. Seep in pure water sip warm all day. Also, mint oils ... peppermint great for energy. Best of luck.

Re: Fatigue after cold virus

I'm not sure why my muscles are always sore... I do have an autoimmune disease so I'm sure that has something to do with it... Or I'm developing another one.

MissBree-I always use Peppermint Oil, I love it! I will definitely have to get my Vitamin D levels checked soon.

What other autoimmune diseases do you have....they do love to party together.
I have ulcerative colitis, primary biliary cholangitis and asthma.

Be sure to get blood tests for mono virus and CMV, which is a mono-like virus. These are usually self limited, but can take up to 3months to resolve. The other test that would be helpful is an ANA and CK which tests for autoimmune diseases and myositis, an inflammation of muscle tissue. A sed rate and CRP are helpful too to see if chronic inflammation is causing the problem. These are all blood tests that can be done at once and provide useful information. Let us know what you find out.

Re: Fatigue after cold virus

My sympathies ! I suffer from Hypothyroidism and am getting over a cold - slowly. I guess it takes longer as our metabolism is not functioning as well as it should. I'm just aiming to stay warm, curl up with a good book and drink hot tea, cammomile tea and eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies. I'm just glad the awful sneezing and coughing is almost over - still very heavy with cattarrh. Time for anothe de-caf tea. Get well soon.
