Common cold symptoms helped by steam?

Is inhaling steam helpful for relief from common cold? Has it any adverse effects?

It's possible to burn oneself if the steam is toooo hot or too much concentrated (towel tented and no air circulation).

It's been a method used to loosen mucus and help to expel it.

Many thanks. My concern is steam inhaled by nose from a small electric water evaporator.

Whether it would help to disinfect nasal route , and if it would do any harm to the respiratory system if taken on a regular basis.

Yes, it will help the congestion. Hot showers will also loosen it. And saline spray (like Ayr) can help as well.

It doesn't disinfect...and can you tell me exactly what an electric water evaporator is And exactly what you are using? Is it a cool mist humidifier?
