Servere Cough and gasping for breath

I returned from a S. Cal. family reunion at the end of July and within days developed a very servere cough which caused me to black out for seconds. Several visits to the Emerg. Room and consultations with my Dr. and other specialists proved fruitless as no one could tell me why I was
blacking out. Heart, Blood Pres., lungs, brain scans, blood sugar, etc. were all acceptable, but no answers. I am over the blacking out now, but several times a day, I find myself coughing and then I have to gasp for breath, and then I am fine for a while.
I thought that this might be regional, (I live in Indiana), or related to mold, etc., but in talking to my sister-in-law who lives in S. Cal. she as well as my niece who lives in NY has had the same gasping problems. There were 6 of the 47 that were in attendence at the reunion have come down with some type of respatory problems, but as far as I know, only the three of us have had the gasping problem. My mother who is 84, developed and still has a cough, but not the gasping problem.
HAS ANYONE experienced this cough and then gasping for breath problem, and is there a name and or a cure for what is causing the gasping. Thank U.

Don't mean to scare you, but this summer there were/are several whooping cough (pertussis) epidemics in the midwest. The one in the western part of our state took awhile to discover 'cuz doctors aren't familiar with it. It's a bacterial infection -- very contagious. My child's day care had a case of it and all the kids had to be given antibiotics. Everyone is immunized for it, but the vaccine wears off by the time you hit your teens.

Someone told me today that she was once given a prescription for a round yellow pill (couldn't remember what it was called) that worked wonders for her cough, so if you haven't tried it, maybe try asking a doctor for the cough suppressent that's a "round, spherical, yellow pill?"
