Identifying a respiratory infection, after 1 month ending in a 1-day fever

I got it in 2001 from a man who had stayed in SE Asia. Apart from the usual effects of a viral illness, the major affliction at first was severe hourseness for 1-2 days. In about a month of seemingly good health, I was hit by fever overnight. Due to weakness, I needed over 12 hours of rest before I could take some food and recovered the next day. My ummune system suffered and herpes spread beyond the usual lip area and the heart rate increased. It was my worst case of bad health but I never consult a physician or take medicines. Just want to know what I had.
