Lower blepharoplasty. When they do this, they usually make a small incision inside the skin of the lower eye - so you don't see any scars. They can either remove fat or add it or just move it. If you have dark sunken circles, you probably need fat added. This can be taken from elsewhere under the eye - usually just a little closer to the eye - or from somewhere else on your body. I had it done and it was fantastic. I stopped having to use concealer under my eyes. Just make sure you get a recommendation for a very skilled doctor and that you do the proper follow ups!

I just returned from a consultation with a well known plastic surgeon in my area on friday..
I went to ask about having blepharoplasty and will it get rid of my dark circles under my eyes.

He honestly told me that the surgery could "exacerbate" the dark circles. He told me that dark circles are pigment filled skin and you can't change the pigment of the skin with surgery.
you can get rid of fat, you can have fat added, you can reduce the fat swell under the eyes, you can smooth out wrinkles with the surgery, but you CANNOT get rid of the dark circles if they are genetic....

I have two more consultations with two other plastic surgeons next week.
I am going to ask the same questions as I am Greek and we are known for the dark circles under our eyes from birth.

Most of the time, it appears that people have dark circles because of the sunken nature of the skin under the eye. This creates the appearance of a shadow that looks like a dark circle. Fat repositioning can fix this. If you have actual dark pigment in your skin which is causing the dark circles, then that is a different issue.

before going for surgery see if fillers like restylane will help.

I tried Restylane under my eyes to fill in the sunken circles. It did improve my appearance but did not get rid of the hollows as much as I would have liked. Surgery is much much more effective. Also, the Restylane was expensive and very painful. They have to inject it right near the bone so even topical numbing doesn't stop the considerable pain. And then it only lasts a few months. In comparison, surgery is way way better! If you really want to avoid surgery, restylane is an option. But I suspect that if you try it, you will find that surgery is not such a bad idea. That's what happened for me anyway.

I consulted a specialist cosmetic eyelid surgeon for the same thing - yep, that is the only area he does - and he said that as you age and everything moves south, the fat is pulled away from the muscle under the eye and you get a hollow area which looks different in colour. He said that 'filling' these areas is the best way to improve the appearance and that injecting with fat is not as successful as injecting with a 'filler'. I don't know exactly what the 'filler' is but it is not your own fat which was the method of choice in the past.
He only operates on the upper eye lids and other areas affecting the eyes. He said that operations on lower eyelids etc. can have much more in the way of complications.

I was at my PS office last friday, getting filler in my marionette lines and asked again about something to counteract the dark circles..
he simply nodded his head "no" and continued with my filler..
I keep asking, and he keeps nodding No.

they're showing a procedure on tv lately for taking fat from the gut and putting it in the breast for a more rounded affect.
i was wondering if doctors are taking fat from our gut and shooting it in/around our circles. would that fix the dark circles?
painful too...

I've been told that fillers can fill these places. However, if it's dark circles I doubt that would do it. So that was useful!!!!

They just had a segment about this on the DR. Oz Tv show (he did shows with Oprah for a long time then got his own show). Hope this helps!
