Question Sound like Costochondritis?

First off, I had my 1st bout with Costo back in 1990 when I was 18. Other than that, no underlying issues. About 3 years ago it happened again. Went for a chest xray; totally fine. Pain lasted about 3 weeks. Took Aleve, etc., ice packs, slept in a sitting up position because it hurt to lay flat on my back...felt like someone sitting on my chest.
I have become very active lately. About 2 months ago I started walking about 3-4 miles daily, and on the days I can't get out to walk, I ride my (stationary) bike 10-20 miles. I have walked/sprinted in two 5k's in the last month. Well....about a month ago it started again. Soreness in my chest/ribs/sternum area. I will admit I am bad at the meds and don't often do the meds/ice packs with consistency. I am still walking (less than I did, but still doing it...just did a 5k 3 days ago). Well, this last week I am in pain! Chest area/ribs are sore to the touch. Sitting the ice on it hurts. I have a tightness in that area as well. It even looks inflamed. The pain radiates to my upper back/shoulders. When I take deep breaths I can feel cracking. When I bend over I almost feel a "tightness" at the bottom of my neck (which is stressing me out). It's hard to explain. I don't even know if that is explaining it right. Also if I yell loud, calling out to the kids or something, I sometimes feel like my neck is tightening up and I'm almost being cut off from yelling. Does that make sense? This has started after a few weeks of the costo flare up. Anyone else know what I mean?

P.S. Went to a Rheum last year for Raynauds and they tested me for everything and bloodwork came back fine.

Re: Sound like Costochondritis?

My first advice would be to see your regular doctor. It sounds like a bad case of Costo, but just to be sure, I would go see someone. Have you considered seeing a physical therapist and/or chiropractor. I went into physical therapy to help treat the costo, and began seeing a chiro as well. It turns out that along with the costo, I have a few ribs out of place. Getting those set back in, along with the stretches, ultrasound, etc., from the PT seems to be working. Because of side effects, I generally can't even take the OTC NSAIDS recommended for the swelling and pain, so I've been managing the pain with the help of the people I'm seeing.

It sounds like your pain is VERY severe, though, and may need something more drastic. I know at one point steroid injections were mentioned, although reviews on this and other websites seem to be very mixed on that treatment. Again, I'd see your doc. Even if this is costo, it sounds like you've done a doozy!

Good Luck! And prayers go with you!
