Degenerative Disc Disease in Neck

I have Degenerative Disc Disease in my neck. It causes severe pain on the right side of my neck and head.

The doctors I've been to don't believe that i'm in a lot of pain. They said the MRI doesn't look that bad and i'm too young (i'm 41)

Recently I had to quit taking narcotics, because I was becoming addicted. I quit Soma, Percocet and Morphine.

My pain is really bad again. I don't know what to do.

Last night, I was in a lot of pain. I took about 14 Advil throughout the day and it still was hurting bad. I eventually fell asleep and it felt better this morning.

I'm scared. I can't live with this pain.

Anyone have any similar experiences?
Anyone have any Non-Narcotic Med suggestions?
Any suggestions appreciated!

Hello Awkwardashell!
You bet I have SIMILIAR EXPERIENCE and all I want it to cry. It is almost or perhaps impossible to deal and live with it 24/7 a day.

My MRI also dosen't look so bad and doctors told me I am too young also (your age).
I also, can't live with this pain. Every doctor I had to go to just loughed at me (literlly), no one believed me!.

What happened to you, if I may ask, did you have a whiplash? (even years ago).

What I am taking right now is: Lyrica but the problem is all you want is to sleep, I am always tired. Been taking it for good couple of months 7 months. It does help though. But it makes me so tired...doctor told me to take less of it but less doesn't help.

Also, clonazepam (klonopin) helps a lot - in fact, that works better than any other meds I have tried so far. Problem: I have high tolerance to pain meds. This medication is better than oxycontin really.

Or valium, helps but not as much as clonazepam (klonopin).

It's a miserable life, I agree.

I have this problem fo 8 years. What about you?

Re: Degen. Disc Disease in Neck

I don't know what caused my problems, my neck just started hurting in 2009. I think it was caused by sitting in front of a computer everyday since I was 12.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Degen. Disc Disease in Neck

I also have degenerative disc - not much is left of the disc in my C5 & 6. I had an MRI done that showed the issue. I went to a spine specialist and had my one hour surgery scheduled for10/8/13. He said they'd go in through the neck and insert a cadaver bone in between the 2 vertebrae. He said I'd only be out of commission for about 2 weeks.
Now I have a gallbladder that has to come out first so the neck surgery will have to be postponed until I get a clear from the surgeon doing the gall bladder. My spine doctor had no issues with me and my pain. He prescribed pain meds and muscle relaxers to hold me over to the surgery. I hear it's not really a bad surgery to go through. My thought is my neck hurts like hell all the time, so the surgery can't hurt too much worse than the pain I have daily.

Best wishes to you.

Hello Awardashell
You need to find a doctor that understand pain. Keep looking do not give up. I go to the pain clinic and my doctor there is the only one who understand my pain. He even think about my husband and what he might be going through as to my pain. LOL I have bone on bone in my neck and it hurt like a [email protected]#$ I wake up with stiff neck and serve muscle spams. I am on baclofen for it. I also take methadone but that helps for my back pain it does not touch my neck pain. I had my PCP tell me that he does not go by MRI as to pain either because one MRI can look really bad and the person can have no pain and some one else can be OK and they can have a lot of pain. SO he does not go by that. It is sad to say but you are going to have to keep going and going to the doctor to show him how much pain you are in before they believe something is wrong.
Can you get in to a good pain clinic. Have you been seen by a rhumy doc yet because if you have OA, you will get treated better and a lot of people with DDD have OA also.

Hi everyone,

I have been having severe neck and right shoulder pain also for several months. I went to the ER a month ago, and they took xrays. They showed degenerative disc disease, bone spurs and arthritis. They gave me pain meds and sent me home. I couldn't tolerate the pain meds, so I stopped them. I went to a spine specialist last week and the doctor ordered a cervical MRI which I will be having tomorrow to see exactly what is going on and will then recommend a plan of treatment, maybe surgery, possibly physical therapy. I totally understand the pain you are having. I haven't been able to sleep or even do routine tasks during the day without considerable pain. I am also having a pinching in the back of my head, possibly a pinched nerve caused from the problem in my neck.

I will let you know what I find out after I get the results. This is pain that is extremely difficult to deal with. Nothing seems to help. I've tried heat, over the counter pain medicine and I can't get relief.

Keep us informed, I hope to have the results next week.

Re: Degenerative Disc Disease in Neck

Hi there.

I had surgery 3 weeks ago for the ddd in my neck. Fortunately, only one disc was involved, but it sure did hurt. Especially after sitting at a desk and working on a computer all day. The spine specialist went in thru an incision in my neck, about 2 inches long, and placed a cadaver bone (I still can't stand to think about that part) and 2 screws. I spent one night in the hospital and was released the next morning. The pain from the surgery was no worse than the pain I was having before it. I've been out of work 3 weeks (planned on 2 but work was slow & I am getting pd 60%, so I took another week). I'm glad I did. I am still having some pain from the surgery, but nothing that hydrocodone, valium and a heating pad doesn't help. The incision in the neck is pretty ugly but it no longer hurts and the throat pain only lasted a week.
Overall, the surgery was no big deal and the neck pain I still have should be gone soon. I hope you get some relief soon.

Take care,

JB

Hi everyone,

I had the cervical spine MRI on November 20, and I have the results. I have cervical spondylosis with spinal stenosis and a broad central disc herniation at C6-C7. I also have spinal stenosis and a central disc protrusion at C5-C6 and spinal stenosis and moderate left foraminal encroachment at C3-C4. In other words I have moderate disc degeneration and arthritis with spurs all along my neck. I will start physical therapy in a couple of weeks, and I will be having an evaluation done at the local pain management center to see what type of pain therapy they can offer.

Has anyone else had physical therapy for neck pain? I am hoping it will do some good and give me relief.

I wish all of you good health and relief from your pain. I'm sure we all need that.

hi you don't need to go to all that bother of topping yourself, tell me some thing about you, im in pain every day plus I have vision problems , not to mention financial <problems> that could ruin me, but still I decide to go one day at a time, are you a coward as most days I feel I am, but then I get strength from somewhere I don't know?

bud I lie down at night with pain in my neck , during the day ive pain in my head, cant see clearly , feel like my brain is going to seize up all the time as the centre of my head has a lot of stinging pain, feel off balance evertime I move, im a regular tall guy. I think about the famous saying , 'get busy dying or get busy living', your on the net so your a survivor, you want to live and that is why your questioning it all , remember you would not be on here if you wanted to quit, your a winner not a looser

Re: Degenerative Disc Disease in Neck

Hey folks I know what you all have been going through.... My battle to try & get something done was about 4 years. And it is not over yet. Just continuing

I went to one doctor here that was a supposed to be a top grade Neurologist around here. Well I found out different first hand that he wasn't. He didn't care to look at the MRI reports himself, but to just read the report from the radiologist. he said that he ordered PT for me in his notes, But never mentioned it at all.

Finally I went to my PCP & he sent me to a "Pain Management" doctor. Well after 2 or 3 cervical injections he realized that this just would not help or cure me.

So He sent me to Louisville, Ky. to the Norton Leatherman Spine Center.
You can read what I went through here:
http://www.healthboards.com/boards/spinal-cord-disorders/937278-going-norton-spine-1-week.html

I was getting something done & it really has helped me. But now I am still having some more complications from I guess doing too much too quickly.

Also I never got to go to post surgical physical therapy due to loosing my health insurance about 2 weeks post op.

So what I am saying go to as many other doctors or surgeons who you want to. To finally when one of them listens & lays out a plan for your recovery whether it is having operations or doing nothing at all.

But only you will know yourself when you are finally satisfied to help your pain, injuries or other that is bothering you.
