    Tooth extraction with an abcess

So I have 2 teeth that are abscessed and both need to be removed. One tooth the gum is swollen above it. I went to the dentist last week and he says they need to be extracted but I had to wait till this coming week for my insurance. He didnít give me any antibiotics or anything. Iíve been rinsing my mouth out with sea salt. But can they extract my tooth if the gums swollen above it and itís abcessed?

They can and they will, but they will also put you on strong antibiotics to make sure that the infection does not spread. It is also possible if you are seeing an oral surgeon that they will do IV antibiotics during the removal surgery. This is something you need to discuss with your dentist. You might be able to call them on Monday and ask if you can start taking an antibiotic now if you feel that you need it- starting it before the extraction is not going to hurt anything.

    Good luck!

So the dentist gave me antibiotics 2 days ago but the pocket on my gum seems to be getting a little bigger. Is that normal?

It very well may be normal, hon. Just having a hole you are not used to can feel huge.
I had a tooth removed and it felt like a crater in there. As the swelling goes down the hole for awhile normally feels bigger.

Try not to fiddle around with it with your tongue. I know that is not easy, but you need to make yourself leave it alone. Once you forget about it you will feel better about it.

Tongues are known to have a lot of bacteria on them. Try to keep your tongue off of it so it can heal. Just keep up the salt water rinses. Be gentle with the water swishing, and don't force water, your tongue or anything else into the hole.
