Question abscessed tooth and salivary glands

Can an abscessed tooth cause tender salivary glands? I just had a root canal started on a "dead crowned" tooth on Thursday, and my salivary glands are tender and slightly swollen on the side of the affected tooth. It kinda reminds me of when I had the mumps many years ago. I haven't found this on the net anywhere - I'm really hoping the abscess is the cause of this. I don't have a problem with dry mouth or anything, my glands seem to be working fine, they're just tender and slightly swollen. Thanks for any help!!

I would think that the slight swelling and tenderness that you describe is more likely to be your lymph nodes not your salivary glands. This is a normal and healthy response to infection (e.g. your abscess). The usual nodes to react are just below your jawline in the molar region. The tenderness/swelling will subside as the abscess heals.
