help! braces and then bonding/veneers or just old-fashioned moving of teeth?

i'm 27 years old and looking to straighten crooked bottom teeth (had braces as a kid, didn't wear my retainers). i've sought several orthodontists' opinions b/c i couldn't seem to find any that seemed similar. so now i've got 2 camps of opinions (2 drs each) and i'm struggling to choose between them. i've included a lot of details just in case, so sorry if it's too detailed.

1) braces on lower and upper teeth (not all the way to the back). shave some of sides of lower teeth to reduce tooth width. braces on upper teeth just to move one lateral cuspid out towards front of mouth and to have more control over final bite. the two docs who recommended this are well-respected -- one teaches at a big university and the other treats mainly adults.

2) braces on lower and upper teeth (i think essentially full mouth) and then create space between top teeth followed by bonding or veneers. one dr. said it wouldn't look right unless i did this b/c i have more tooth width on the bottom than on top. another one said i might be worse off than i am now (i currently have one crossbite between the left too-skinny lateral cuspid & bottom tooth) and could possibly even risk underbite (yikes!). both these docs seemed very competent as well.

my 1st set of braces left me with teeth that seemed fine, but i don't know about "function." i was able to chew, didn't have pain, and my teeth looked great. i don't have a "toothy" smile, so you can hardly see my lower teeth except when i talk. and the top ones look fine to me and everyone else, although i can detect the lateral cuspid crossbite now that i know to look for it. my side bite is good (Class I, as one doc said).

it seems strange to get braces just so i can create gaps in my teeth that have to be filled, but i don't want to create dental problems just b/c i don't want to have gaps or deal with bonding.

i'd appreciate any suggestions about how to decide between these options. i don't think i need any more opinions, but i'm having the worst time figuring out which option is best for me! has anyone else here had a similar experience?

thank you!
