Post dull ache = root canal???

Had a dull ache in my lower 2nd molar yesterday. The x-rays looked OK but it hurt when he tapped it. He says I need a root canal because the filling in the tooth had "gone bad". I was not expecting "root canal" to be the answer. My question is what are the chances that the filling could simply be replaced? (I was in such shock, I forgot to ask him that!!)

Also, would there be any advantage (other than cost) to simply having the tooth pulled? My wisdom teeth have already been pulled, so this is the last tooth in back on the bottom.

What did he mean, 'gone bad'? Was he talking about decay around the filling? Usually, that shows up on an x-ray, unless the filling is blocking it.
