Aggressively using Toothpicks can cause infection!

I have a tooth that traps food. Knowing that trapped food can cause decay, I decided to remove the food with a toothpick, and sometime the food is hard to remove, so I' would keep picking until I get it. This has turned in to a nightmare.

About a month ago, I started getting a bulge/infection on my gum. Not sure I would classify it as an abscess, although the dentist did give me anbitotics. I am now off them. and the dentist says the infection is gone. This happened a month ago, and the bulge seems to be slowly going down, but it is still annoying (no pain).

In summary: Be Careful when you use toothpicks!!

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

You don't have to use them aggressively to get an infection. Wooden toothpicks really should not be used in the mouth. It is much better to use floss or dental picks to remove debris. Most stores sell flossers which are a combination of floss on one end and dental pick on the other. They work very well.
