Dental Cleaning Ok when tooth abcessed?

Is it okay to have your teeth cleaned in the dentists office when you have a tooth abcess? The receptionist at the office says its okay, but I wondered if any of you have ever had experience with this.
My son just got off a round of antibiotics for an abcess about three days ago. The abcess is still there. He had this appt. for a cleaning already set up. You can still see the lump on his gum and the redness. The lump actually seems a little bigger. The receptionist said the cleaning was fine, the hygentist would look it over and do more xrays to see if it was actually still there, and since the dentist is out of the office, if they thought he needed antibiotics, they would call him and get it taken care of. I'm just worried that the cleaning will cause the infection that is there to worsen or spread. She says no. Have any of you had experience with this?
