elcollier, I have been experiencing the same symptoms for 11 months now. After many different Dr. visits & tests I went to an Oral Medicine Specialist. She said it could be 1 of 4 things..1.burning mouth syndrome- Possibly caused by hormonal changes which they are now treating with low doses of antidepressents. (They are still not sure why this helps) 2. Silent Gerd- which I will need to see a Gastro Dr. to find out for sure. 3. Chronic Sinusitis-I will need to see an ENT or 4. Vitamin or Iron deficiency.

If you can go to an Oral Medicine Specialist. I found mine at the dental school at a Big University Hospital. She is going to work with me till we get this figured out!

I hope this helps you some! & keep us posted on what you find out too. Sometimes this symptom can also be caused by something as simple as a side affect from a medication. The Oral Surgeon I saw said his Father had it but was caused by his medication.

    Re: Burning Mouth Syndrome

I've definitely heard of it, I've been living with this since June of 2007.

It resulted (in my opinion) from dental work that was done during that period. I went back to the dentist in July of 2007 complaining of numbness in my lips and burning mouth.

I tried Amitriptyline and Neurontin. I had side effects on both, and neither one helped the burning. I know take a small dose (.25mg in the evening, .25mg at bedtime) of Clonazepam, and in my situation this helps.

    Re: Burning Mouth Syndrome

Hi - i have been diagnosed with burning mouth syndrome in May 2008. I went to several doctors/dentists before I was referred to a specialist at Unniversity of PA Hospital in PA. It has been difficult explaining to my family what I feel like most of the time and does affect my life. Right now I am on Clonazepam 0.5 at night and Numoisyn Lozenge 3 times a day. They both help. I have been told they can control the affects but can not cure it. I am hoping they are wrong. It was nice to find a support group on line cos no one around here knows what i am talking about. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Re: Burning Mouth Syndrome

I was diagnosed with BMS in 2003. I have seen ever specialist there is out there. I had heard it could last years. I remember bawling and bawling because I thought how can I live with this pain for years. Well, I'm going on my sixth year and I still have it. The pain exists and NO ONE understands. It always progresses through the day. Some days, it's okay; some day, it's off the chart, even my lips begin to burn. The only medicine I have found that helps me is Nuerontin. I take 300mg every day at night. Sometimes I up it to 600mg. During the day, if it gets painful and I just don't want to deal with it, I take a 100mg pill. It numbs the pain a bit. It's the pits. I feel for all of you out there because I live with this, too. Aside from this illness, I am a very healthy woman of 46, thin, active, energetic, etc. The only thing I can figure is that my genetic makeup is not good: mother died of lupus, sister has fybromalgia, aunts are plagued with arthritic illnesses. I guess this is my story. Inflammation of the nerves in my tongue is what I'm guessing. Doctors don't know what to do for me; they can't help really except waste your time on a lot of tests. I do notice that cinnamon and garlic do irritate my tongue, but nothing directly makes me hurt all the time. OH, you know, I do hurt more when I'm not well-rested. So sleep is a factor, which causes issues for my sister with fybro. So it seems to be related, I think. Good luck to anyone out there. I wish you better success than I have had
