    Tooth is bothering me too

I've read several post about people being bothered by their tooth and I am having the same problem. For the longest time I never had problem with my teeth except for my night grinding for which I use dental night guard at night to protect my teeth.

Last 2 weeks ago I had flu my main problem was not the fever it was my sinus that is painful and the mucus not coming out and after a week of medication and nothing is happening, one day I woke up with a bad pain in my tooth I thought it was probably because I grind too much at night cause I forgot my dental night guard. after 2 days it was still bothering me so, I went to the dentist right away, she took x-ray and did not see anything wrong - no cavity, no cracks, no bump, no holes. but she recommended that I need a root canal right away. i was surprised because I would think that it would be the last option but she said its the only solution. I asked her to give me antibiotics and see if after 1 week the pain will be gone. I also asked her permission if I could go diving over the weekend and she said it is okey but I just have to be careful of pressure and such. When i went diving my sinus got worst it was hurting so bad but it was the only time that I was able to let my mucus out. the next day I felt so much better - i was able to breath better and no more flu and the pain from my tooth was gone. 2 days more I stopped the antibiotics and there was no more pain but there's a tingly throb that every time I chew my food I can feel it and it is bothering me. Why is it still there? is my sinus related to my tooth ache? is root canal the only option because I believe it is better to save the tooth than kill it.
what specialist should I see besides a dentist? for the others who have experienced this what happened after all the root canal and medications?

    Please help!

Re: Tooth is bothering me too

    Hi,
Is it a top tooth? If so, it certainly could be sinus related. Add to that, night time grinding, and it could add up to a toothache.

If it has gotten better as your sinus has gotten better, I'd be doing a wait and see.
It's possible the tooth root was irritated by the sinus infection and it will go away by itself.

It is also possible that the tooth itself has the problem, but that will show itself soon if it is.

Try giving yourself a bit of time. It's possible the toothache was sinus related (TOP tooth only) and it will resolve itself. If it's a tooth infection, the pain won't go away.
In that case, a root canal would be the treatment of choice in where the tooth nerve would be removed, the tooth filled and you may or may not need a crown. A root canal saves the tooth. It just removes the nerve which is the source of the discomfort.

GOOD LUCK. Give it a few more days to completely clear up your sinus and if you're still having problems, a root canal procedure would be the treatment of choice.

    Hope this helps.
    Best to you,
    Gellia

Re: Tooth is bothering me too

    Hello Gellia,
Thank you so much for your reply. Yes it is only top tooth particularly the first molar. I did stop the antibiotics to see if it will still hurt. I actually don't feel any pain now it is getting better only the feeling of - it seems like the tooth is moving but it is not. I'll be waiting more to see if it gets better and better. I prefer not to have the root canal if possible.
Thank you again and will be updating in case anything comes up.

    Sincerely,
    Dinah

Re: Tooth is bothering me too

Good luck with it Dinah! If it doesn't go back to hurting, it may just be your sinus. I hope so. If it continues to bother you, a root canal does save the tooth and is relatively easy in a front one. Don't fear it if it happens.

Best to you and do let us know how you are.

Re: Tooth is bothering me too

Stop lying to people by promoting root canals.

Root canals tend to save the outer structure of the tooth, but after the removal of the nerve your tooth is dead and does not have the polishing and healing properties, since it has been filled with a foreign material.
You can only save your tooth by avoiding root canals. If an infection (caries, a cavity) has reached the dental pulp and the nerve is infected it can still be saved. As long as the nerve is still alive there are alternative treatments that can help the nerve heal, form a new layer of secondary dentin which will seal the entrance to the dental pulp and the rest is filled as usual.
The molars are very important to be in their place and alive since they do all of the chewing work.

I won't go into much detail now but canals that have been "treated" with the foreign material almost always remain infected and thus are dangerous and might cause severe troubles at a later time.
Hopefully it was just a sinus problem and it's solved now.

Re: Tooth is bothering me too

    Hi,
I'm not promoting them, but if the tooth is still bothersome what alternative is there besides a root canal or loss of the tooth?

Of course if it's just sinus that would be great. I'm just saying if it isn't, what is the alternative besides a root canal?
You call that promoting it? I don't. It's just what would come next if it isn't sinus, right?

I stand by what I said. Hopefully it's just sinus, Dinah, but if it isn't, and the tooth is still bothersome a root canal would IMO, be the next step. If there is one in there I forgot, my apologies, but maybe slepey can tell us what it is? If my first reply is read again, I said I would be doing a "wait and see". I don't call that promoting a root canal.

Good Luck, Dinah. Hope you feel better soon.

Re: Tooth is bothering me too

I explained in my post what an alternative would be...read it again.
And you said that he shouldn't be worried if it comes to a root canal...i know i was even though i didn't know exactly why at the time but now i realise it was because it is the worst thing to do besides a tooth extraction and i regret i didn't have the knowledge i have now at the time.

Smile Re: Tooth is bothering me too

I have had many root canals and in most cases the tooth is still good and functional after years - 10 to 20 years.
I do have a couple of root canals that were done poorly in that they were not complete all the way down to the bone. They show on x-ray that there is still some residual infection there at the bottom of the tooth. Fortunately they do not hurt or give me any other symptoms. Dentists say they should be re-done at some point, because they could be dragging my health down.
I do have another tooth that has never had a root canal and has just gotten sensitive to cold. The dentist says that is not a good sign, but no infection shows up on x-ray yet.
Since it just started recently, it may take 6 months to show up on x-ray.
Meanwhile I am to to to an Endo for better evaluation.
I am quite sure, however, that it is the start of an infection in the root because I have hardness and tenderness in the lymph gland on that side under my chin. I usually get that condition, when I have a tooth infection and I also feel a little warmer than usual and tend to have agrevation of my IBS with gas and some soft stools.
I am using a homeopathic remedy to counteract the symptoms, Mercury Sol 30c. I put one pellet in a small water bottle and sip every 20 min. for a few doses. I do this several times a day.
    That helps with the symptoms.
I am also taking 2 remedies to try to remove the infection, and that is probably why it is not hurting much at all. Those remedies are Hepar Sulph Calc 6c and Silicea 6c - I take these alternately, also in water, as above.
I am hoping I will be able to clear the infection and not have to have a root canal on this tooth.
We'll see. I will try to provide update.
    Hope this is helpful.
