    Re: PMDD and meds

pre-menstural dysphoric disorder... i get really crazy before my period, like totally crying, mad, sad, everything. i told my therapist, and he told me about pmdd. he told me that he thinks zoloft might be a good drug for that, but i dont know if i want to have to switch again, eventhough i feel like real crap before each period

    Re: PMDD and meds

I was originally put on zoloft for PMDD, and it really didn't do much for me except turn me into an insomniac, sadly. I was switched to EffexorXR a couple of months ago and have seen SOME improvement, but I think I may need to increase my dosage. To be honest, it's hard to say because I'm in graduate school, and I am under a lot of pressure, so I feel somewhat justified in my anxiety-level, to some extent. Are you on birth control? Yasmin28 is often given to people with PMDD, but I am on it and it has actually increased my level of anxiety, basically making my PMDD a permanent state (fun times!)... I guess the point is that everyone is different.

I don't think antidepressants help with that. Xanax might - it's something you could take to calm you down only when you need it and not every day.

    Angry Re: PMDD and meds

I've been taking 20 mg Prozac for 2 and a half months for dysthymia. My doc says to wait a few months to see how it helps with my PMS/PMDD state of psychosis, but I don't really think it is helping much so far. Is there no way to banish PMS for good?? (I know, not in this lifetime..)

My doc mentioned that there are 2 possible ways to increase medication for PMS, and she sounds unsure of both:
    1. Take a higher dose a week or so before your period.
    2. Increase the dose 2-3 weeks before the period, assuming that it takes that long for the medication to kick in. She called it "pulsing".

Has anyone experimented with these methods? Have they helped?

PMDD and PMS have the same symptoms. It's a marketing tool for antidepressants. Also, whereas PMS is considered just a medical condition, PMDD is considered a mental disorder. You just got labeled by the psychiatric standard and didn't know it! Rude, huh?

Maybe getting hormone tests would be wise. Soy products and fish oil does help some of the symptoms and those things are not drugs; thus no side effects but don't mega-dose them. Regular exercise smoothed out my daughter's PMS drastically.

Zoloft, actually, has been approved for use for PMDD (see zoloftforpmdd.com)... I think that's the only one, but my doctor gave me effexor anyway, when we realized the zoloft wasn't doing anything. However, it does sound like it works well for some people.

    Re: PMDD and meds

My doctor put me on Serafem, which is Prozac in a pretty little box, for PMDD. I have to take 20 mgs/day. I have really calmed down.

    Wink Re: PMDD and meds

Hi, I went through menapause without even knowing it [except my periods gradually stopped]. I asked pdoc if it could be because I was taking zoloft at the time. He said; Very probably. It was a breeze. cth
