libido and Effexor XR

i took effexor xr for 2 years and it really messed up my libido and ability to achieve orgasm. i was taken off it about 3 months ago because my psychiatrist thought i was doing fine. recently, however, my depression has been showing signs of returning and my gp recommended that i continue on effexor xr at the same dosage.

apart from asking for wellbutrin (im afraid i may start to get angry/moody/irritable), is there any way to alleviate the loss of libido and help with orgasm? has anyone tried topical sensitizing creams (for women)? do they help in the case of effexor-induced orgasm dysfunction? and what about libido? does anyone know how to fix that?

Re: libido and Effexor XR

the only way I noticed a difference was after taking effexor for almost a year and having no sex drive and hardly any orgasms, I wanted to get off it and did so by going from 150 to 75 to 35 to 35 every second day. By the time I was on 35 it was getting alot better, but I have alot of other more phycological issues with sex that cause lapses in activity anyway. If you are only just going on it, it may be a while before you experience relief through getting back to "normal". If you have a parner who is understanding and you can explain that you need recovery more than sex right now that is the best cenario, however if partner is a man, good luck! They want sex all the time. I had to have a few fights.

Re: libido and Effexor XR

Hi. My hubby is on the same drug. He's been on it for about 6 months. I can tell that it has helped. BUT...he's not interested in sex! I'm the one who always has to come on to him...and then he turns me down---alot! After awhile, I get gun-shy and don't bother to ask him about sex. He never was the kind of man who wanted it alot, anyway. Sometimes I wonder if it's the depression or the meds. he's on??? I've just kind of come to the realization that I ain't gonna have an active sex life. I married him and I believe in our vows that we took. I just know that I did NOT picture marriage like this... Any and all replies welcome. By the way--we've been married for 11 yrs.,are both 41 yrs. old and have one child.

Re: libido and Effexor XR

I was also on Effexor XR and lost my libido. my doctor changed me to wellbutrin XL my sex drive is back I have lost alot of weight and quit smoking life has been 100% better without the Effexor XR. only problem was coming off of the Effexor that was the worst... good luck also if you can get on wellbutrin XL they have a website that will send you a check for $10.00 for every RX that you have filled.
