IMO, there isn't really anything that comfortably treats PMS/PMDD without side effects. I suffered from this also and tried everything. I hated the side effects of antidepressants, the hormones made me sick, and special diets (no caffeine, etc.) did nothing. Taking Xanax helped a lot when I realized I was really losing it. It really calmed me down. Have you tried that? I had a hysterectomy in January and I can honestly say I have not had that horrible feeling of PMDD in three months. Maybe that is the only cure...but now I have hot flashes. It's always something.

I'm so sorry to hear about your problems. I've read some stuff about natural progesterone for PMS. I don't have any personal experience about it, but saw a book written by Dr. Lee.

"Dr. John R. Lee, an expert in the field of natural hormone therapy, and author of Natural Progesterone: the Multiple Roles of a Remarkable Hormone"

Have you tried posting on a PMS message board? I used to post on a uterine fibroids board, years ago and there was always alot of talk about things that helped. I never had to use any, but many seemed glad that they found help there. BTW, have you ever had an ultrasound to rule out fibroids? They can make PMS a lot worse. Just a thought.

You're so right about doctors prescribing antidepressants before really trying to help a person in your condition. Talk about adding insult to injury!

Post on boards that I mentioned. I'm sure that you'll find the help you need. I'd do more investigating, but have to run right now.

    Good luck!!

    Re: perimenopause plus pmdd

Well, welcome to the wonderful world of perimenopause! Unfortunately there isn't a magic pill to fix it. Can you believe our mother's went through this and didn't say a word? Every woman's symptoms are different, though most of us have the major ones, like irregular periods, mood swings, hot flashes and depression or anxiety. Some of us breeze right through and others are totally miserable.
My story is: I am 49 (almost 50). Have been going through peri since my late 30's. I did HRT for about 2 years when I was 40 and stopped because I wanted to see what my body was going to do and I didn't like having to be tied to a drug. I started having anxiety and panic attacks about at 43 and was treated for them by a shrink for 3 years. Went on Lexapro for about 7 months at 48 and now I don't take anything except some Black Cohosh and Soy supplements for all of it. I have now started having hot flashes and night sweats, which are awful! I have had periods that have lasted for 3 weeks straight to missing them for 3 and a half months. Moods that were so bad I could have slaughtered everyone in sight.
So you see you are not alone with this and this is a great place to vent and get advice.
    Wishing you better times ahead!

    Re: depression, pmdd & perimenopause

Sorry to hear you're having such a time of it.

I wonder if the progesterone one is at fault? Like the prog.-only mini birth control pills, the p-only can increase depression? Estrogen is more often mentioned as one that does NOT increase depressive symptoms. You said this was a specialist that is treating you, or is this your general doctor?

Perhaps they suggested the a/ds because they do work for some people, but unfortunately not for you. :| Oh, there's a good book all about this kind of stuff, Women's Moods. They pretty much cover from menarche to memopause, and all the complications in between.
