Celexa users- need your input please

    Hi,

My 20 yr old dtr was just preescribed Celexa 20 mgm today for depression & anxiety attacks. She was also given Xanax .25 mgm to use if she felt the panic coming on.

I am on Remeron for anxiety/depression having just started that this summer & this is all new to us.
My dtr is 5 hours away & I am a wreck worrying about her as I know the initial side effects of these meds can be nasty. I want to help her the best I can via phone.
Can you share with me your experiences with Celexa? Doies it cause increased anxiety in the beginning? This is what I am worried about as she calls me when she is in the midst of a panic ( which I want her to do) but these are bad attacks she has, so I am so worried she will be worse on the anxiety end with starting the Celexa. My doc encouraged me to take Xanax the first few weeks of being on Remeron, but I don't believe her doc made the same point to her.
I'm just a worried Mom.... I wish she was home so I could help her more.

thanks for any input. Oh I also read that Lexapro was the "new Celexa" & more helpful with the anxiety issues so I am wondering why her doc didn't prescribe that instead.

I have been on Celexa for about 8 days now and i haven't experienced any increased anxiety.Tbh it isn't helping me that much with depression, but i guess i may just have to wait a bit longer for them to kick in. I also have anxiety problems though, and i can say from my exerience it hasn't caused me to feel any more anxious, so i hope your daughter will be fine.
The only side effects i have experienced are stomach complaints, and insomnia.

    Hope everything goes well!

Celexa can cause increase in anxiety during the first couple of weeks like most anti depressants but should subside by week four. Almost all AD's take between four to six weeks to work at its full capacity.

Thanks xx & trg-- I really appreciate you quick responses-- I'm sitting here so worried about her.
What is the best time of day to take the Celexa ?
I know for me with the Remeron it is taken at night becasuse it is sedating. I worry because she is so far away with no family & she drives to school & work. She is driving the 5 hour ride home next week & of course I'll be a wreck about that.

i take in the morning, and would recommend she does the same because it can somtimes keep you up at night if taken before bed.

Thanks XX- these boards are a lifesaver when you have no one around to talk to about these things.
I just wanted to get a little input before I call her back. She does have trouble sometimes getting to sleep at night, so I will relay that to her & see if the doc suggested a time of day.
I just wish she could co9me home for a month until she feels a little better. But she is determined she can handle this & I know she will- I just want to help because I know what I have been through myself.

    thanks again ~

well, i don't want to be the bad apple here but i started celexa months ago. my psychatrist doctor started me on a liquid form. 2mg. increased it every couple weeks till i was up to pill form. i got to 40mg pills and it was making me so irratated i had to cut back. then it wasn't working anymore. so had to switch. i'm now on prozac and it seems fine. ....i hope...

Almost every med will work differently on different people. I barely made a month on celexa before I switched to paxil then six weeks later I went on effexor which worked but needed help. So now I take 3 antidepressants, a mood stabilizer, a anti psycotic and a sleeping pill. The med game is confusing and frustrated be cause there is not a single pill that can cure mental illness

I know what a roller coaster ride it can be even though i'm new on meds myself & would prefer to be off them, but...
Anyway- my dtr seems to have done ok today & is aware of possible side effects & knows to take a bit of Xanax if needed. It seems she hit it off very well with her p-doc which I am so grateful for. She'll be seeing her again this week which is also good.
