    Lexapro, Smoking Cessation, Depression

    Hi Folks:

First post here. I have been on anti-depressants for 15 years with great success. First Prozac and for the past couple of years, Lexapro. Two months ago I quit smoking and seem to be over the urge to smoke. However, a strange thing has happened... my depression has returned. Its not as dibilitating as it was before I got on medication, but I can tell it is there. It reminds me of the couple of times I tried to get off the anti-depressants... its the way I would feel after about two weeks without the meds: Lack of motivation, gloomy outlook, lathargacy, etc. The only other changes is that I have gained weight since I quit smoking which in and of itself is depressing, but I really don't think that is it.
Is this still a side affect of quitting smoking? Sometimes I feel if I started smoking again, I wouldn't feel this way but that doesnt make any sense. Has anyone else ever quit smoking while being on Lexapro and then found the Lexapro quit working?

Hi madmiguel, welcome to HealthBoards! Yes, I quit smoking 9 months ago and I have become very depressed and suffer anxiety. I went on Wellbutrin to help with the quit and I think this drug can cause anxiety which in turn causes depression so is it the drug or the quitting smoking that got me depressed... LOL I've never taken Lexapro so I can't answer that question. I do feel more messed up than when I smoked, but I do not ever want to go back to smoking so I'll attempt to fix these other things wrong with me.
