    Lamictal - Any comments??

I am seeing a top notch pdoc who finally diagnosed me correctly as bipolar (instead of major depressive disorder with ADD). I was weaned off Effexor, Celexa, and Adderall. I was on Klonopin which is the only med from my original cocktail that I am still taking. My new cocktail is Lamictal, Remeron (for IBS), and Klonopin. I just reached the 200mg dose of Lamictal which is helping with the manic side of the bipolar issue...but the depression is barely any better. I was wondering if anyone has had success with Lamictal for depression and what dose it took to be beneficial. I don't want to be impatient and start adding in more meds. I have told the pdoc that I am still depressed but he feels that I need to give the Lamictal a little more time. I would imagine that the next med he would try is Geodon, which is no miracle drug either. Comments anyone?

I took lamictal for about a year and had to quit due to side effects. I am not bi-polar so it's use was questionable and did not appear to help my depression.
    Good Luck !

Hi, Pianoman. Lamictal has been around for about 15-20 years now. It was primarily used to treat seizure disorders for people who have epilepsy. It was then quite by surprise discovered that it appeared to have a tendency to also relieve depressive symptoms in individuals, and so doctors began prescribing it for that also. Lamictal is actually officially known as a mood stabilizer drug. (I've done extensive research on Lamictal, because I'm on it also.) I can't say for certain yet whether Lamictal is doing anything to assist my depression that I've had for a year now. I've been on Lamictal for 10 months now. My doctor prescribed it when I described to him all of my symptoms, including severe paranoia, and the terrible feeling at all times that something "bad" was going to happen even though it wasn't!! I can say for certain that Lamictal as a mood stabilizer has been an absolute god-send for me. I'm going to sound like one of those commercials now, I know, but it is a fact: Lamictal gave me my life back. Within three weeks my paranoia was significantly improving, and within six weeks my paranoia was virtually gone and has not returned. Ditto with my feelings that something bad is going to happen. However, my depression does remain, and it flops up-and-down all the time. For me, however, even if I had to go on (another) antidepressant, I would never stop taking Lamictal due to its huge success for me in its effectiveness as a mood stabilizer drug. Take care.

I was initially diagnosed with Major Depression. Since then I have been diagnosed with Bipolar. I have been on different mood stabilizers including lithium, depacote and now lamictol. I have had no bad reactions to lamictol. However, I do take low dosages of 2 antidepressants as well. Hard to tell what each drug does but this combination works for me. I have been stable, stayed out of the hospital for at least 6 years and able to hold a full-time job until recently.

    I wish you well.

I have been on lamictal for 5 years. It has helped me a great deal but I also needed an SSRI to complement it. It was not quite enough and I always seemed to have a low grade depression. But if I understand enough about lamictal, it provided both a floor and a ceiling for me. I was not getting as depressed or as manic as I was. The thing that changed was geodon. It is like a godsend. That, and rigorous exercise (I do ironman races now) have quashed any depression or mania that I have.

Hi, you mention low grade Depression. I've been on Zoloft an anti Depressant for many years now and have been very happy with the results. But since a diagnosis of BP 2 a few months ago Lamictal at a starter dose of only 25 mg has been prescribed by a leading Psychiatrist here from a specialist Depression clinic.

The dose will be ramped up to 200 mg over time.

Does Lamictal as a "stabiliser" make the Depression worse - I've honestly never felt manic, although asking friends they have described me as "hyper", "outgoing" "passionate" " enthusiastic". My wife insisted I go to a Psychiatrist, apparently she can't stand the "ups and downs". I don't notice the "ups" and I dread the black times of the "downs".

So ... how does Lamictal seem to fit into the picture?

    Peter
