    Lexapro generic?

Is there a drug the same as Lexapro that is generic? I just started taking it and my insurance company charges $40/mo.

    Re: Lexapro generic?

    Hi,

There isn't yet because it's still under patent. When the patent runs out and after the company makes their millions, it'll be released under generic brand names.

    Best ... Scott

    Re: Lexapro generic?

Celexa (citalopram) is the older form of Lexapro. It's available as a generic. In the US at CVS and Walmart it is only $4. The dosage is double for Celexa. So 10mg of Lexapro = 20mg of Celexa and 20mg of Lexapro = 40mg of Celexa. Remember that this is just like changing from any one antidepressant to another. It might work great for you or it might not.

I've been fighting my pdoc to switch me from Lexapro to Celexa and she finally did it. But that was after she wanted to switch me from 20mg of Lexapro and 300mg (a day) of WellbutrinSR (the generic) to Cymbalta. Lexapro and Cymbalta are each $60 on my insurance. Generic WellbutrinSR and Celexa are $4 each. Can you guess which option I picked.

Though I haven't made the switch to Celexa yet, that will happen later this week. I hope it works for me as well as the Lexapro has. (I've been lucky that I haven't had to pay for the last 3 months of Lexapro. My docs all gave me samples until we were sure it was the right drug for me.) But I also understand that that I may need to go back to Lexapro. (but I'd rather not. All my RX's for all my health problems are already costing me $140 a month.)

    Hope that helps.

    Re: Lexapro generic?

Currently there is no generic form of Lexapro. My mom works for a doctor and she told that there will be one coming out, but not for quite a while.

    Re: Lexapro generic?

Thank you all for your responses. I might wait it out for a few months before I make any changes.
