    Citalopram (Celexa) question

My husband has been taking 40mg Citalopram (Celexa) for about 2 years and has been doing ok on it. He is currently experiencing a severe depression and the doc upped it to 50 mg.

My husband has to call his psychiatrist every four days to let him know how he is doing. Mental illness runs in my husbands mom's family (bipolar, depression, schizofrenia, you name it, and uncle of aunt had/has it) and so the psychiatrist is making sure he doesn't develop any mania or (worse) psychosis.

I have read there is no need to up citalopram higher than 40mg, as the difference in effect after 40mg is sort of not noticeable. Anyone here taking more than 40mg?
I do not notice any difference in my husband other than he seems to be going downward still...
