Re: Depression and Long-Tern Rejection

Yes I believe it can, constant rejection can effect self worth and self esteem, and I really believe that this can cause depression.

Specifically related to rejection -- I mean what do you think please about long-term rejection, in its many forms, possible being the cause for my depression?

Re: Depression and Long-Tern Rejection

How are you being rejected? I think that might offer some answers.

Re: Depression and Long-Tern Rejection

How rejected... that's hard to answer.
Verbal trauma from birth from a hateful sister.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder -- being an assembly of toothpicks all my life was proof to me of sister's persistence that I was defective.
The very growth and appearance of depressive ideas may be looked at as self-rejection?

Re: Depression and Long-Tern Rejection

So this was something that began with the verbal abuse of your sister?

Re: Depression and Long-Tern Rejection

I may correctly say she ruined my life -- now I'm 52.
Then again, there are two reactions tots have to such abuse. One is to cry and get mad and likely fight back. The other is like me, the sensitive one, who goes into a corner and sucks his thumb.
I've a lot of rebuilding to do in my life emotionally, and not a lot of time to do it in.
By the way, you're cordially invited to my pity party!

Re: Depression and Long-Tern Rejection

So your sister who was a child verbally abused you as a child and the words of a child have shaped the foundation of who you are as an adult?

Re: Depression and Long-Tern Rejection

Professionals say the personality (barring later extreme influences) of a person is formed in the first 5 years.
We ran from a bad dad when I was 6. My mom, sister, and myself, became a tight group hiding from dad (who I never really knew). Even after danger from him was over, we still "hung out" mostly together.
So I suspect the words and interactions with my demeaning sister formed my negative attitudes, and our lingering togetherness - despite the arguments - as we grew reinforced and grew my own personality into a non-social person with no self-worth, self-value, sense of having a future worth anything, deep inadequacy, culminating in a sociopathic sister and a severly depressed self.
With this I wonder if rejection from my sister was the root cause of the formation of my self, in relative isolation bodily and socially.

Re: Depression and Long-Tern Rejection

So have these past experiences created a situation where you avoided things and never moved towards anything in life?

Re: Depression and Long-Tern Rejection

They created a personality that never cared for the future, of a truth not thinking that I would ever have a tomorrow. That's real depression.
In High School, I considered career counselling to be for the "smart ones."
I wish I was a psychologist.
Not until I found a wonderful Church lately have I been trying to shed this depressed, anxiety-ridden mind.

Re: Depression and Long-Tern Rejection

What would an ideal 'tomorrow' mean to you or be to you?

Is that a metaphor for something more significant to you?
