    Low platelet count, Raised MPV/PDW

Hi, my father is around 70 years old. He is Indian and diabetic but has controlled his sugar well. He also had a cyst (possibly malignant) in prostate a couple of years back, from which he recovered well with BCG therapy.

Recently, he underwent some routine hematology and pathology tests. Most of his indicators were good, but he had a low platelet count (74000 per microliter) and high blood sugar F. (207 mg%). Also, his MPV (10.8 fL) and PDW (16.2%) were raised too. My father is also fully vaccinated against Covid19.

I read somewhere about research indicating that diabetes is correlated to high platelet reactivity, low platelet count and high MPV. But I also read that many other factors can cause low platelet count including infections, cancerous cells, etc. and with his history of cyst, we are worried.

What is your recommendation? Did anyone have similar experience?

Does your father take any medication for his diabetes? Does your father limit the carbs in his diet?

How well has he controlled his blood sugar levels? Do you have any of his recent blood sugar levels prior to the 207?

Diabetes is a nasty disease that can cause all kinds of nasty health problems and unpleasant disease symptoms.

Your father is fortunate to have such a caring, helpful son!

    Regards, Bob

Thanks a lot ! Yes, my father's blood sugar level was in normal range for almost 3-4 years. His sugar level spiked recently only. I believe he ate a lot of mangoes this summer.

He used to take some medication but was not very regular on that too. But he did control his diet and carb intake - stopped eating less bread/rice and more veggies.
