    Fasting and blood tests

I have been tested several times for diabetes and my glucose levels have been borderline. But my doctor has never asked me to fast for the tests. If I had fasted, would my glucose levels have gone up or down?? thanks, Chris

    Re: Fasting and blood tests

Normally we fast for blood work, especially the glucose test. However, there is the A1C which does not require fasting and it averages the glucose over the past 3 months. Maybe that is the test you are having.

Ask you doctor about fasting and what kind of test is going to be done.

The fasting is usually lower than after meals. Unless, you ate too much the day or evening before and your glucose level is still on the high side.

You would be wise to get a glucose monitor and test fasting, 2 hrs. after meals, keep a log. You will soon notice which foods elevate the BS and which do not.

It is best if the fasting is about 100 or less. Normal non-diabetic fasting range is 70-110. Blood sugar 2 hrs. after eating should be 120 or less.

Take measures now to control blood sugar and prevent becoming a full fledge diabetic. Best to keep the glucose under control in the non-diabetic range.
