how long for diabetic diet to work

I started low carb diet 1 week ago. sugar level was 287 at start and now I am getting readings between 171 - 100 dependng on when I ate. How much time should I give diet before my Dr prescribes medication? With this sort of progres is it possible I may not need medication?

Re: how long for diabetic diet to work

You didn't mention when exactly you are testing. Is it two hours after the START of your meal that you are getting the 171-100 readings, whereas before you were getting well into the 200 range? You need to monitor how your 2hr post prandial (meal) readings are and gauge it that way. If you are consistently under 140 2 hrs after the start of your meal, you should be ok to control it with diet. Keep an eye on your A1C also and see how it is in three months and then you and your doctor can decide.
