Hx of type 2 diabetes since 2000. My A!C's are usually 7 or below but want to get down around 6 or below. I was on 3 diabetic pills before and am still taking metformin. I asked my doctor to let me try insulin, current on Lantus 20 units at night and Humalog as needed a meals. I find that I need at least 4-8 units of Hunalog at meals. Any help or knowledge from another type 2 on insulin would be appreciated.

Re: gman2

I'm a type 1, but the principles of insulin use are the same. You need to know 2 ratios. Your insulin to carb ratio (how many carbs you can eat per unit of insulin) and your ISF (insulin sensitivity factor). This is how many points 1 unit of insulin will drop you. Most folks start out with an I:C (insulin to carb) of 1:15 and then adjust from there based on what the test results are. Test, test, test and you will figure out what works for you.
