Question 10 Yr old with Pre diabetes

I have a question about my daughter, she is 10 and was suffering from some stomach pains and was sent to a Gastro, who ran a lot of blood work, one being a glucose fasting test. She called me a few days later and said that her glucose was elevated, over 100 I think she said and was a pre diabetic and was given Meformin HCL 500 mgs BID. Her father is diabetic and I began using his meter to ***** her finger and her readings are always normal. She has readings in the upper 70's and the hightest its ever been is 95. I am just a bit confused?? Can anyone shed some light for me?? I have cut out all sugar in her diet, she is about 40 lbs overweight but very tall for her age, she is 5'3. She has lost 13 lbs since October!! I am so proud!!

Re: 10 Yr old with Pre diabetes

Home meters are not as accurate as lab drawn tests. So if her glucose was elevated, I would trust that rather than the home meter. The next time she or your husband have labs drawn, take the meter along and test at the same time. You will see how accurate the meter is.

In the meantime, it's not enough to just cut sugar. All carbohydrates (anything starchy like rice, potato, bread, pasta) will turn into sugar in the body. Cutting back on that will help the glucose and also help with the weight loss.

Re: 10 Yr old with Pre diabetes

Has this Dr. or any other one done any other glucose tests before or since? If this was the first time her test was a bit elevated, as slightly over 100 is barely over the limit, I hope the Dr. isn't putting her on meds. for a one time elevation. Guess I just find it strange to put a 10 year old on Metformin if she is just pre Diabetic as I would think they would try diet and exercise first.

Glad to hear she has lost weight and hopefully she might beable to quit taking meds. as 10 is a bit young. As Cora said, have her go very easy on carbs and do a search on low carb and low glycemic foods to help her with her diet.

Best of luck and wishes....JJ....
