General questions on diabetes

I had a few questions for diabetics or people who know a lot about the condition.

I don't currently have diabetes but have some risks.

I have diabetes on my mother's side of the family. Does that increase my chances more so? And which is higher chancewise maternal or paternal or no difference?

In relation to diabetes and obesity. What is the link exactly? Is poor eating habits as in up and down blood sugar the cause, or is it simply the body being too heavy/obese

More to that question would be a scenario. Who's more likely to get diabetes? A person who has hectic diets and chaotic eating habits or a person who continues to get more and more obese?
