In addition to what has already been suggested, be sure to get enough fiber in your diet. More fiber means more friendly micro-flora in your digestive system. The friendly microorganisms will multiply and will change your metabolism for the better.
So how much fiber do you need from natural whole foods? 25 to 35 grams per day, depending on the size of the person. Low fiber diets tend to fail in the long run.
Most overweight/obese people that I meet don't like fruit, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. And that's where most of the dietary fiber comes from. They might occasionally eat a very small portion of those items, thinking they are eating a lot. Of course if you don't like something, a little seems like a lot. So remember, you need somewhere between 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day from natural whole foods, not supplements.
