Have to lose about 75 pounds to join the Coast Guard :(
Well I've decided to join the coast guard and talked to a recruiter today who told me I was too fat to join. I guess you have to be in perfect shape to fix broken electrical equipment :-/

So I need to know how I can lose 75 pounds as quickly as possible and be able to keep it off. What kind of diet/exercise plan do I need to work on? What kind of medication is there to help me? What exactly do I need to do?

I am desperate enough to go on a complete starvation diet because I want to join the coast guard more than anything in the world and nothing is going to keep me from this goal.

Info about myself: I am 23, 5'8", 265lbs. I've been overweight since 3rd grade when my parents divorced. I've been 260ish since high school for the last 5 years. My eating habits are mainly fast food and I drink a lot of coca cola. I know the obvious ways to help lose weight (stop eating fast food, drink only water, etc) So please don't state the obvious.

It is going to try you 9months to a year to get down to 190pounds and that is the max you can wiegh to get in the USCG . Now how much can you weigh at you are in? probible 20 pounds less so we are at 170 max . So we are looking at 100 pounds. Ask your recruiter in service weigh is. Take it from someone that knows the fatboy program first hand.
a low carb diet and lots of exercise.
1. read the Atkens diet book
2. cut out ALL sugar, flour, corn products, grain
3. keep your carb intake to 20 grams aday EVERY day
4.exercise every day walk or run every where possible 5 miles would good. add push-up and sit-ups every other day.
5. Drink lots of water a gal. aday

I do not want the scare you off but you have sit a big goal ahead of you.
one more point starvation slows wieght lose , your body slows down in starvation mode .

when you come off the diet uscg food you will put on 10 to 20 pounds vary quickly
read the low carb stuff here
rapid weight lose is not good for you , if you start to feel bad see a doctor, you can mess up a lot of body chemistry.

I just thought I would add that you don't HAVE to low-carb to lose 100 pounds. Meaning, if you don't want to, you don't have to. There are other ways to lose weight.

I would strongly recommend reading Atkins and giving it a try. I have tried many diets and the two that I found work best for me are Weight Watchers and Atkins. The reason that I would recommend Atkins is that I feel so good on it and I personally find it so much easier to not "cheat" while on it. Once you have removed the carbs and sugar from your body, you don't crave them anymore. You do get some carbs in the form of veggies. My DH has been on Atkins for a little over a year and has lost around 120 or 130 lbs. More importantly, he has been able to get his diabetes under control and no longer uses insulin and recently (yesterday) his dr. took him off of all of his oral diabetic medications.

Having said that, I also felt that WW was a good, sensible diet to try. Both options need to be looked at as a way of life rather than a "diet". You should be prepared to continue eating that way for the rest of your life or there is a good chance that you will just gain all the weight back (and in most cases more). I know you didn't want to hear the obvious but I think cutting out the fast food and cola will definately be a great start. Best of luck!

I agree that you should try the Atkins diet and exercise. It really is a great program (although, there are others out there). It will seem hard at first, but the weight really will disappear! Sounds like you have the determination to do this--good luck :)

I strongly recommend that you seek out a doctor that participates in a physician managed fast. I lost 182 pounds on a program called HMR in 1996. I have kept the weight off by closely following the good eating habits that I learned in the weekly classes. This program works well and has been around over 20 years.

Losing the weight is one thing. Making a permanent change in your eating habits to manage your weight over your entire lifetime is another. Simply following a diet like Atkin's to loose weight will work. But unless you make the decision to change what you eat and the quantity you eat you will bounce back just like so many have done once the reach their weight loss goal.

In my working with the morbidly obese after losing my weight, I learned that most overweight people have one thing in common...their unwillingness to accept the fact that they are not in control of their lives. Much like any other addictive behavior, overeating is a difficult issue to overcome. A medically monitored fasting program works because you loose weight and by not consuming solid food for the period of time you are in the program you break the older habits of overeating or eating the unhealthfull foods you are consuming now. This is the key...breaking old habits. Self-deprivation is not pleasant but let me tell you this it has its rewards in that you come through a different person with a different attitude towards food and eating.

Rixtar What is the cost of HMR? Because most insurance does not cover weight lose.

I do agree with you about control on over eating . On atkins I tend to eat less, I have a net savings on food of $50 a week, I use to run a $20 thru the vending machine at work every day.

hi joshua,

I lost 80 lbs in "6 months" and the way I did it
was by exercise 2 hrs a day and my magic pill
Adipex. Now there is a generic brand named
phentermine and I heard it works as good.
but you have to keep exercising. Good luck!!
