Negative effects of food dyes on health?
I was wondering which types of food dyes are supposed to have the most 'side effects' ? Some colors of food dyes are banned in various countries, but they are still legal in the US. I've heard a lot about how the red food dyes can affect people, especially children, and cause hyper activity and all kinds of other things.

Re: Negative effects of food dyes on health?
I know some people are sensitive or even allergic to food dyes. I have personal experience with FD&C Yellow #5. There's a lot of it in yellow and orange colored candies and I think it's in certain cheese snacks too. I noticed years ago, that whenever I ate anything with that food dye in it, I had trouble breathing. It was like I would sigh a lot. Just felt like I couldn't get enough air in my lungs. I had to give up one of my favorite candies - Those little yellow candy corns.

As for the red die, there's been so many studies on that ever since the 70's when someone said it made kids hyperactive. After all these years of studies, they still haven't been able to show a connection, but the rumor lives on.

I agree, it's DYES
There's a reason that they are up to FD&C Red #40...all the lower numbers were found to be carcinogenic or otherwise poisonous and then were banned, except for #3. Live long enough and you'll probably see Red #140!

It's what make JELLO a scary food indeed.

Besides foods, dyes are also put into medicine. Prescription & over the counter. White might be added to the powder inside capsules, but the capsule is colored or partly colored and that's dye.
So maybe if you have a reaction, it isn't the actual medicine, but the dye.
